Why no bare bones MR9800 notebooks??

Thread Starter
I believe that if sombody would make a 17" 1440x900 MR9800 w/256 based notebook with a gig of ram and a 60 gig hd and a DVD/CD rw with a basic 1.7 centrino and simply Windows XP and nothing else that it could cost around 2000 and would FLY out of the stores.
What is wrong with these companys, besides Dell, for missing this huge gaming market out there ??

A lot of companies are skipping the MR9800 because Sonoma/Alviso will be out soon with PCI-Express upgradeable graphics, thereby making the 9800 obsolete and not worth the money to develop and distribute to the market for only 2-4 months...also, the 9700 will run most games perfectly well right now...

and isn't the 9800 more power-hungry than the 9700?

MR9800 just isn't going to see it's way into a T&L system. It's too power hungry and requires much more cooling than can be accomodated in a typical Pentium M based system. Battery life would suffer so this would not be a good "fit" with a centrino platform at all.

Dell had an exclusive on the 9800 for a long time. I don't believe that any notebook manufacturer was even allowed to design a notebook for the 9800 during that period (Which might not be over yet, I don't know, is it?).

Anyhow, point is, by the time Dell's exclusive deal wore (or will wear) off, there were (will be) a bunch of ATI chips out there that are better already.

ATI already has the Mobility X600 and X800. There is not really any reason for a notebook maker to choose the 9800 at this point.

It was just for four weeks.

Look at sticky. Dell seems to be the only one that carry this model. At this point in the game, I think most company would rather spend their resources looking at the newer X800 or something similar for their next upgrade design.

I would say the 9800 might start to come into play mid next year as they gear to replace laptop with the 9600 or lower now. Those with 9700 will gear up to be replaced by I would assume the X800 or something around there

Dell started designing their 9800 compatible long before then. Dell had a 4 week period AFTER they launched. The actual delay in design is significantly longer, and considering how long it takes to bring a new notebook to market, by the time they were able to start designing them it wasn't worth it so they skipped it.

I got my 9100 with all those specs except the processor (p4 3.2 instead) for only 2,200 shipped, so they weren't that far off. A 1.7 centrino would be a significant bottleneck in a laptop with the MR9800

A 1.7 GHz Pentium M? Unless you're doing video encoding, it's not going to hold you back much more than your Pentium 4 will. They're very efficient chips when it comes to performance VS clock cycles.
