Need a DTR recommendation

I need hard drive space, graphics aren't most important (no PCI-e, too expensive), I have around $1,600 to spend. Any recommendations? This is really for a friend. Not sure whether to go for P4 or Athlon64. He does Mathematica work and so I think that means P4 over Athlon64, though maybe not. It would be nice to be light, even though it's a DTR.

Check out the Uniwill 258KA0:

You can get custom fitted models from e.g. these retailers:

HP Pavilion zv5000z (DP523AV) and/or Compaq Presario R3000Z (DP533AV) series can also be customized with a 100GB hard drive and whatever else you need.

So you'd still recommend Athlon64 over P4 for that kind of stuff? It's similar to video/audio processing, though I suppose it also gets into floating point calculations.

What's a reliable retailer for Acer, or would I want to just stick with standard BestBuy and whatnot? I'd like to look at prices and stuff.

I think the acer is a good one, because it uses desktop hard drives. But it is a monster of a laptop.

And no, sorry, I do not know any Acer vendors.

Yes I do, since Athlon 64 outperforms P4 on Mathematica according to this:

The price for this laptop does fall under the 3790 and the 259IA3 in price, which is another reason to consider this laptop.

The 258KA0 doesn't have the 'instant play DVD' feature of the 259IA3, but it still looks well built and should give you very good performance in anything you do.

You might also want to consider the Asus Z80K, should come in at or under your pricepoint with a better build quality than the Uniwill and it has an SXGA+ screen.
