Did The 3790 Find Some Competition

I was literraly saving the last few dollars to get my 3790. Through the forums I was pretty much sold on this awesome lappy. Obviously this did no stop me from looking around though.

Now Uniwill came out with a very interesting system with very similar specs and price. The lappy is the Uniwill 259IA3, there are a few reviews here about it but nothing to fully convince me. Would be nice to get all your thoughts on this new lappy.

What I find reallly temping about this system over the 3790 are:

- ATI 9700 with 256mb instead of 128mb
- Thinner (0.9" - 1.4")
- Lighter (6 - 6.5 lbs)
- From the reviews it seems that it does not have a heat issue. (Something that keeps coming up for the 3790)
- For the same price I can configure it with better specs.

The few resellers that cary this model are:

http://www.uniwill.com/products/perf...a.php?HL=1&P=1
http://www.ibuypower.com/ibp/store/c...r.aspx?mid=134
http://www.rjtech.com/r259ia3.htm
http://store.ekm.com/15wsceno25at.html
http://www.viciouspc.com/product/config_shogun.html (just updated 12/21 it seems like my favorite option since its like $300 cheaper)

Out of all these RJTECH seems to be the most reliable reseeler. This is my maine gripe. The 3790 has awesome support through some many quality vendors including sager (dl, pct, etc). The uniwill does not compare.

Hopefully this will spark the curiosity of you guys, specially those of you who have a 3790 and will be specially critical to this new model .

The thing that is most important to me is the screen, and the screen resolution, and so the fact that the uniwell does not have a WUXGA option alone is enough to make my descision, but it just depends on what is important to you

Along the support line diffrence, I might have missed it, but I didn't see ANY extended warranty options on any site for the uni.

i've been looking for a review of that machine

I'm also basically sold on the 3790...but wsxga is the screen i want, and if this guy runs cooler and weighs less it could be the way to go. questions are battery life, and general quality of parts. I've been looking for a review for awhile and found none......

I´m not sure if there is anybody in the states with the models available here. I know a few guys have made benches on australian models but I can´t tell if they are the same.

from those user reviews i would say the Uniwill is no competition for the 3790.

no 12 cell option, on uniwill.com the manual list 4cell / 6cell option only.

and the 9700 w/256mb is a joke since it is heavily underclocked for unknow reason, it can't even out bench the asus 9700 w/64mb. what is the point then?

From what I've read about the 9700 with 256mb is that it is not any better or faster than a 9700 with 128mb. I have no conclusive statistics though. It looks good on paper.

Thinner and lighter is always good. You should try to find out what the battery life is, though. We know from these forums that 3790 will get 2-3 hours on 6 cell and 3-5 hours on 12 cell.

WSXGA is an awesome screen by all reports. You won't be dissappointed either way.

I'm sure you've looked here for more comparisons on 15" models:

Well thats exactly why I believe more users opinions would bring more light to the subject. I´m not to confident with the one bench made because it doesn´t make any sense. Such a higher video memory shoul improve specially vs the asus 64mb.

Again I´m not even sure that the user who made the bench has the same version sold in the states.

I just found a long thread about this lappy which I have not finished

Sounds interesting...

I'm a little skeptical though. If it's smaller and lighter.... which MIGHT translates to lower clock speed... because they can't afford to clock it as high or the heat will be too high to contain at acceptable temperature in that smaller case. Lighter also means they may have cut down battery power as we all know the 12 cell on the 3790 already adds about 1 pound! If it's similar spec, the battery life would definitely take a major hit if it's on 4 cell....

I've also heard from multiple sources that more video memory equates to slower clock rates or performance or something.... It only benefits when doing intensive image editing or something.

But in my humbly opinion... the bottle neck now is not the amount of memory, but the core and the speed.

But hey, if the battery lasts as long or longer than the 3790, I say go for it.
