My new Fujitsu N6010: pics (LARGE), initial thoughts - Page 6

Frodo here.

I know this is an N6010 thread and I am seriously considering buying one based on what I have heard here on this forum. However, I just wanted to give an update on first hand impressioins of the other models I have been considering: the Qosmio G15 (WXGA), the HP zd8000 (WXGA) and the new Sony VGN A690 (WUXGA). This is not intended to bash them in any way, but these are just some of my impressions in my search.

I went to my local Circuit City and checked them all out first hand. The Sony screen looked great and images looked outstanding. However, the text while very sharp was painfully tiny and I just can't seeing using it for prolonged work sessions. Tweaking the display settings helped with font size in some (not all) cases, but fonts never looked as "normal" as they did in all their tininess at the 1900x1200 setting. Also, the build quality of the case seemed inferior to the other two and the keyboard seemed a little "mushier." The Qosmio screen looked fantastic when just doing work stuff and text in a spreadsheet looked very sharp for a WXGA screen. However, the touch pad seemed a little quirky and launched applications just because my cursor hovered slightly too long over an icon (before I clicked anything!). While I'm not particularly interested in TV tuners, I also had a chance to see the Qosmio's TV tuner in all of its multimedia "glory" and it was definitely not even normal TV quality, like a bad feed from CNN in IRAQ. I saw the same DVD played on the Qosmio and HP ZD8000 using WinDVD and the smoothness on the Qosmio was again totally unacceptable, especially for a $3000.00 "multimedia" machine. It wasn't choppy, but it was definitely not smooth in comparison to other laptops I've seen. Given the gorgeousness of the screen, I was somewhat surprised and disappointed. (If given the opportunity I would opt not to include the TV tuner, but with Qosmio that option doesn't exist.) The HP was MUCH smoother even though the screen was noticeably darker in comparison to the other two screens. Even the Circuit City rep also commented about how much smoother the HP was at playing the same DVD. (I am still a little open to a WSXGA version of the ZD8000 or Compaq X6000). Keyboards on both the Qosmio and HP seemed quiet and very responsive. The touch pad buttons on the Qosmio seemed a little too small compared to the HP. Of the three, I preferred the design and apparent sturdiness of the HP to the other two. Fan noise and heat was something I couldn't determine in a Circuit City environment.

With that said, I seem to be on the cusp of ordering the N6010. Whatever laptop I end up with, I am grateful to the folks in this forum for their helpful information and opinions (esecially Michael42 for his pics and review, and for Jack_L and Seememom for their responses to my questions). That is the kind of help most of us would never get from places like Circuit City, Best Buy or CompUSA. So, while we may not get our ideal laptop in the end, we are far less likely to make a regrettable mistake. I'll let you know what I get.

Thanks again, folks.

Frodo I just can't see you being disappointed with the Fujitsu. As you said, screen is stunning. Plus build quality is outstanding, doesn't run hot, DVD playback is excellent, fan noise is low, and on and on and on......good luck

What's their warranty like and where could you have it serviced?

First, If I buy this, I'm going to opt for the 60GB 7200 option (from P1). Is it possible to add a second harddrive down the line myself? I don't need striping RAID 0 or anything, just something for data storage later on.

Second... I know the N6010 has a VGA output so you can run a CRT simutaneously with the laptop display. This is essential for me in the work I do. My only problem is I would like to have my second display be a LCD and not a CRT. Is there a VGA to DVI adaptor out there that someone can point me towards? Or possibly another solution?

Thanks so much for any more insight you can provide. This is proving to be a very tough decision.

first - > the laptop supports only 1 HDD (unlike the qosmio) but this lappie (i own one is far superior that the qosmio IMHO.. your best bet would be to get a SATA Drive + SATA enclosure + PCMCIA SATA Card...that way you connect directly to the pc bus of the computer and i feel (i`m not sure about this) that it is faster than an IDE HDD connected to the USB2.0 Bus.. maybe it seems fast cause the hard disk i use is a 74GB Raptor (10000RPM) - anyways i install all me games and do all photowork in that harddisk casue its faster ...i`ve yet to benchmark the setup though also i think you might as well go for a seagate momentus 100GB HDD casue it benchmarks close to the 60Gb 7200Rpm harddisk and costs a little more with much more space ..anyways upto you

second - > there are vga to DVI converters in fact every respectable VGA card comes with one FREE !! soo if you look around you might even get one from a fellow gamer who doesnt use it..or else head to ebay..

Third - > the fan noise is a bit loud yes ...but its not too loud ...if you have heard other lappies which have 5000+ rmp fans ...

hope that helps

N6010 Alternate resolutions

I have the N5010 which looks quite good at most resolutions. How well does the N6010 look at lower resolutions, as far as clarity etc.

Thanks

Thanks
yeah dude i`m seriously sold on it .. in fact the only thing that made me feel bad is the new dell XPS lappie reviwed in toms hardware ...its not out yet so i`m not sure how much of a fortune it might cost

the finer details ->
1) there is a seperate USB capture device which accepts (only in the tv tuner version) the svideo, composite, and obviosuly the tv tuner as input for hardware mpeg encoding ..AWESOME isnt it ?

2) the CPU score in sandra is as good as a it gets !! this baby gets all high scores for cpu, mem, multimedia ..the only bad thing is my model comes with a fujitsu 4200rpm 100GB harddisk ...soo the harddisk score is quite low - but that will change if you fit in a hitachi 7k60

3) the included software to play DVDs in windows (win DVD) can also play MP3s ... what i didnt expect is that you can use the remote to skip through songs - pause play and when your fed up shut down the computer (when you press power down a big display comes on showing the stuff you can do ... shutdown, restart, standby OR cancel that command if you accedently pressed it)

4) unfortunatly the reomote only works with that dvd software yesterday i tried to change the remotes INI file setting to work with windows medai player OR better yet the new version of win dvd (it comes with version 5 ..i got hold of the new version 6)

5) the dolby headphone support thingy is software based and must be enabled through the winDVD software - so its not a big deal ..the sound is just awesome dude ....people in my uni cant belive its a laptop untill they see it..

6) huge huge screen - you might know that poeple say nuthing but good about it and its sooo true - widescreen - very bright ....battery lasts for about 1.50 min ...when watching a DVD

7) the other best thing noo body mentioned (or atleast i didnt see it anywhere) the TV card can be changed casue i bought this laptop from the states and now i`m the UK where the standard is PAL - not NTSC ...soo once this gets launced in europe i might get to change that (but some people report that the TV dispaly is a bit grany)

i dont know about customer service in the UK ... but in the states i just mailed them to ask about the possibility of a PAL TV tuner ... (just for kicks) and i got 3 mails - the first was that they accepted the mail the second that they transferred the mail to their tech dept casue it was a tech question and the final one saying that its not possible yet !!! dam they said yet when i think most big manufactures would have said no - rather reply at all ? all these 3 emails took 3 days . one per day ... isnt that good ?

i could go on and on about the super fast WIFI with its cute on / off button ... the volume indicator display ...the very informative battery readout... the this ...the that ... i love this laptop ...i fall in love every time i come home and sit beside it ...is a desktop replacment ... a very sexey one ...(stop stop stop )

If any of you are interested in a stock model, newegg is blowing the N6010 out the door. $140 instant off with a $50 mail in rebate for $1559 plus $6 shipping for the base model. That's an awesome price! The high end model, with remote, and I assume the TV Tuner, is $200 instant off with a $50 mail in rebate for $1799 plus $6 shipping. They were doing $250 instant off a week ago. It's still an awesome price though. The downside is you can't customize them at all - wysisyg.

I hope this signifies that Fujitsu is clearing inventory to make room for new lappies with the X800 mobile.

I'm probably not going to buy because I'm waiting for the X800 mobile, but that price - that's tempting.

Wow....no doubt the N6000 is AMAZING.....beautiful! And I LOVE that background that Michae42 has (the one with the subway/highway, and the parking lot below it) Does anyone know where I can acquire a copy of that picture? Has anyone seen it before the posting, or do you think it is a picture that Michae42 took himself? Any feedback on how I can obtain this picture for my background would be great! THANKS IN ADVANCE!

Is TV tuner works in PAL system or only in NTSC?
And how can I buy this model in EU (or is there any N6010 "brother" for European Union)?
And how with Sonoma-and-X800 version?

i`m still looking for a PAL card with my N6010 bought from the USA ...i still cant get hold of it casue there hasnt been a release yet ..

the only advantage with it is that you can hook up composite or svideo devices (such as camcorders ) and get them captured out from the built in mpeg encoder ..quality is quite good - other than that i cant say that TV looks good when its black and white

soo yes wait a bit for sonama and x800 ...i couldnet wait

It is a shame that M Dell cannot get that simple fact that the 75-100 bucks per unit he spends less for NOT getting the TOP LCD part is keeping his company from totally dominating the market.
M Dell. Quit using those 2nd and mostly 3rd tier LCD screens ,
Thanks

I just got my N6010 yesterday and I have to say that I love it so far...

One question though: I opted for the DVD writer and have some data I'd like to dump to DVD-R. It seems that the N6010 didn't come with DVD burning software? Or am I missing it? There is the PCFriendly DVD player, but that's all I'm seeing.

If it doesn't come with DVD burning software - what are you guys using software wise to burn data or video DVD's?

Thanks a bunch!

emmm ... yeah i noticed that they didnt provide any - funny aint it ? i use nero anyways...

also this is one of the few laptops i`ve come across that hasnt no infra red !!!!

anyways i dunno what harddisk you got - this lappie kicks ass with a 3.2Ghz mobile + 1GB ram ... either a 60GB 7200rmp hitachi OR a 100GB Segate Momentus would be nice addidtion ....i`m thinking about the segate

good choice.. after some time this is still the best IMO

Hi Madcat23,

I assume that the Seagate is 5400 RPM..if you find the 7200 RPM, let me know..
well i thought a lot and went ahead with the 100GB momentus .. mainly cause its realiability and the speed of 7200RPM brings in more heat...

the fujitsu is fast enough for most things - a hitachi wont make a significant difference - what else do you want to know ?
