hi...

i installed ubuntu 4.1 Warty Warthog x86-64 on my 258kao but x doesnt start. i took pics of error messages so maybe i can get some help.

my lappy specs (if it matters):
uniwill 258kao
15.4" wxga
ati 9700 128mb
hitachi 7k60 (60gb 7200rpm)
AMD Atholon 64 3200+ Clawhammer
24x CD-RW/DVD Slimline

my distro:
Ubuntu Linux 4.10 Warty Warthog x86-64

my problem: x doesn't start.

error messages (in order): (5megapixel....56k warning)
Picture #1: http://home.comcast.net/~therussian89/ubuntu1.JPG
(yes..my lappy is a widescreen)

Picture #2: http://home.comcast.net/~therussian89/ubuntu2.JPG
(first error message...selected <Yes>)

Picture #3: http://home.comcast.net/~therussian89/ubuntu3.JPG
(the basic error message....selected <OK>)

Picture #4: http://home.comcast.net/~therussian89/ubuntu4.JPG
(same as above...diff angle...could be easier to read)

Picture #5: http://home.comcast.net/~therussian89/ubuntu5.JPG
(would i like to see more errors....<Yes>)

Pucture #6: http://home.comcast.net/~therussian89/ubuntu6.JPG
(more detailed error message...i think)

Picture #7: http://home.comcast.net/~therussian89/ubuntu7.JPG
(same as 6...diff viewing angle)

Picture #8: http://home.comcast.net/~therussian89/ubuntu8.JPG
(so it wants to disable my x now eh? selected <Yes>)

Picture #9: http://home.comcast.net/~therussian89/ubuntu9.JPG
(it reads: "Ubuntu 4.10 "Warty Warthog lappy ttyt lappy login:")

Picture 10: http://home.comcast.net/~therussian89/ubuntu10.JPG
(more errors after i try "startx" command)

Picture 11: http://home.comcast.net/~therussian89/ubuntu11.JPG
(zoomed into the bottom of error in picture 10)

so...any suggestions on how i get it working?

or perhaps someobody can recommend a distro that works out of the box (ie...no tweaking) with Linksys WPA11 ver.3 802.11b wifi card?

thanks.

My first guess would be that your xfconfig is hosed. I don't know ubuntu so the filename may very and its location. I would suggest that you do some googling to see what linux on laptops or similar has to say. Good luck.

i think this would be useful if i said Ubuntu is based on Debian, uses Gnome as a GUI and GRUB as a bootloader

Did you edit anything and does it drop you to a shell ? _
if yes cd /etc/X11
then
su
your pass

nano XF86Config-4 to edit it back

Also, did you try to set up your ATI ? this is a commong error if you mees up the fglrxconfig
re run again fglrxconfig

If you did not try to set up your ATI then edit your X file to look something like mne :

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen0"
Device "Card0"
Monitor "Monitor0"
DefaultColorDepth 24
SubSection "Display"
Depth 1
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 4

you can always format and reinstall

I ran Ubuntu Linux recently, but in a controlled environment (VMWare) so most hardware issues I did not have, however I did run into the issue of the X server (Graphical User Interface) not activating. The problem was that the partition I allotted for Ubuntu was too small (1GB) and it was suggested that no less than a 2GB partition is necessary for a proper install of Ubuntu Linux. Once I changed the size, Ubuntu installed without a hitch.

i ran ubuntu before on my laptop without problems. this time the only thing that is different is i have the wifi card and a different mouse. so what i am doing right now is reinstalling with the original mouse in there....see if that variable makes a difference.

why? because i just installed slackware 10 and when i did the "startx" it gave me an identical error message (i didn't ahve a mouse plugged in...hoping it would use my touchpad). as i look at ubuntu verbose boot...it says "synaptics reset failed" so i am guessing it also doesn't read my touchpad, and on top of that it doesnt read my new mouse. i mean...it is worth a try. if not i will probably go to FC 2 or 3 or Mandrake 10.1 ...or possibly Yoper

I havent played around with it enough to solve that problem, but you might be able to get some help over at the Ubuntu Forums : http://www.ubuntuforums.org/

EDIT: I see you have already done that.

Hm... the error says it's from the missing v4l module, which I assume is a "video 4 linux" driver, the TV tuner. Why are you loading a TV tuner module? Can you paste your entire XF86Config-4 file here for our scrutiny?
