3790 - Laptop Lap Rest?

Thread Starter
Hey all,

I posted a while ago about which laptop to get.. and, well, I finally purchased a 3790, and I LOVE it! The only problem is.. I'm afraid to use it on my lap sometimes as it covers up the fans. If it was just for a little while, I wouldn't care, but it's used nonstop for 6+ hours sometimes.

So, my question is.. does anyone know of a product that sits on your lap that you set your notebook on that helps with ventilation, and is comfortable?

Thanks in advance for your replies!

First off it's not good to use a laptop on your lap in the first place cause it heats up your testicles and thus is bad for fertility. :P

But yeah there are lap rests but that was awhile ago. Probably in the history of the forums if you do a search. heh

Hi Warden,
Does the 3790 with 12cell battery fit comfortably on the bean bag tray? And do I guess correctly that the tray surface is plastic?
Thanks a million for the tip.

23"x16"x5 the surface is plastic but has a Removable gripping surface, can't think of the name of the stuff at the moment, it fit my 5680 but NO external mouse.

I do not know the dementions of the 3790, but the 5680 is 13.25'X11.5" and it fit
I'm really thinking of this guy though.

the internal dementions are actually 21"X12.5"

here is a few pics of the 5680 in it
this first one you see the cup holder is ALMOST in the way, the cup holder can be removed. but it leaves an area under it that isn't the plastic.

this pic you see how close the 5680 fits in:

this is the actual tray I use:

Home made Lap Desk

Well this could almost be the "Lap Desk Thead"...lol..
I measured my home made lap desk, its an old cutting plastic cutting board and a seat cushion - a freebie I got a while back like the ones you get at football games. The cutting board is 15" wide and 11" long. The my 3790 is about 14 1/4" by 10 1/2". Its a humble setup, but it works for now.
In these pics you can see that my crude setup lets the fans breath. At the same time, its small enough that when I have my logitech pro flight stick connected to the side of me, its comfortable to use. I have absolutely no external mouse room. That too, I place next to me while gaming on the couch...
A second concern for us 3790 users outside of letting the fans breath, is getting the notebook placed just right so that the front panel buttons don't get pushed in the middle of game play. There have been posts on how to disable those, but I don't want to do that.
I like the bean bag setup and I just took a look at the lap desk(see The Warden's Post), but 37.99 is a steep price eh? Maybe it is worth it... What about a metal surface for the lap desk? Good Idea or not?

I did the search a few different ways...and YES ...there are posts on this subject. In any case its good to see a few more ideas about the issue of lap computing.

37.99 a steep price? for something you payed >$2000?

and if you use a Metal surface to put the lappie on? I'd say no, the laptops get a little too warm and the metal would prolly get too warm and Seriously uncomfortable for you and the machine.

adding to this
I couldn't find it without the light, so I ordered one with light, then Removed the light as you see.

this is the 5680 on it:

this thing is HUGE 22" wide, 16" Legth

Warden, this setup is very appealing. I like that its wide enough to fit a mouse pad. I too would take the light fixture off. Thanks for the pics! I guess the pillow underneath molds well to your lap like the BeanBag product...or not? I forgot that the 5680 also has front panel buttons to worry about. So the raised bar on the lapdesk helps alot.
Nice follow up posts.

I use a similar lap desk thingy with pillow bottom and desklike top. mine has a pad across the front which is good for resting my wrists on when I use the toucpad. I use the touch pad rather than a mouse. go somewhere like Sam's club or Walmart and I am sure you can find a lap desk really cheap.

laptop desk 2.0 is good. I got one for my 3790 and it fits perfectly with 6 or 12 cell and it folds up with a mouse pad attachment.

I think I'd be more fun and challenging building you own custom laptop desk but that's just me. If and when my perfect lappy in my sig gets made and I get it I'll make one and post pics and how I did it here. I'd probably use like half inch particle board wrapped in leather or vinyl with a bean filling on the bottom. Sounds easy and cheap but sounds like a fun project.
