Laptop Freezes

Thread Starter
For the past two days my laptop has begun to periodically freeze up.
The system doesn't shut down, it simply fails to respond to anything, not even control+alt+delete.
This typically happens after the laptop has been running for about an hour.
It's happened five times in the past 24 hours.
Anyone have any idea what might be wrong?

Check its temperature?

Thanks for the reply.
How do I check its temperature? I downloaded PC Wizard 2004 but it just gives me a reading of 0 degrees C. That can't be right

How do any other 9860 owners monitor laptop temperatures.
I've tried PC Wizards 2004 and SpeedFan. Neither of them seems able to access core temperatures. I'd be really grateful for some help here.
Thanks.

Use Mobile Meter, it'll read your CPU and HDD temps.

Thanks so much for the tip on Mobile meter.
My system just crashed again. I waited about 5 minutes and rebooted. The current temperature is 46 degrees C.
What would you consider a dangerous temperature?

If the problem isn't temperature, what else might it be?

After running 3dMark03 the CPU temp rose to 59 degrees C. Is that normal?

My system just froze again with a CPU temperature of 47 degrees.
So it doesn't seem to be a temperature issue.
Any other ideas?

Willie,

What were you actually doing when the system "froze". Where you using your mouse? What type of mouse do you have and how is it attached? (USB or PS2, etc).

Your temps really don't appear to be a problem; however, I don't have the same unit as you do.

I was using the touch pad.
The system has frozen several times over the past two days and each time I was doing something else.
Today my room mate watched videos on my laptop for 6 hours before it crashed.
Then it crashed after about 15 minutes while I was running a virus scan.
At other times it has crashed while I was browsing online with firefox.
The frustrating thing is that there doesn't seem to be a common denominator there.

I ran 3dMark03 to try to task the system and it ran fine.
Then 15 minutes later it crashes just browsing onlline.

Could someone give me a tip on how to read my HDD temp.
Mobile meter gives me the following message:

There is no controllable HDD
The hard disk drives that are not connected to the on board IDE
controller may not be accessed correctly.

I think I solved the problem. I noticed that my virus scan was always crashing at the same file (windows system file). So I reinstalled windows (and then reinstalled my graphics drivers) and the problem seems to have gone away.

I would advise anyone with a similar problem to check to see if they have corrupted system files. If so, reinstall windows.
