i9200 compared to a Powerbook G4 - Page 2

J-Lu,

How can you make a comment like this? It is clear that the 9200 would blow away the G4 laptop in any of the areas you've outlined. As a matter of record. Adobe designs most of its software for the PC before it gets ported to the Mac platform. In the old days, Mac did have the advantage in the "artist" world, but that advantage has long since evaporated.

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt, but blanket statements with no foundation wont cut it here. Tell us why you believe specifically the G4 is
better suited for artistic applications?

"There are a few difirence betwen Power Book G4 and the Inspiron 9200, but just one of them are important one.
If you are going to use photo, video editing or 3D creation (such Adobe Photoshop, Illustraitor, 3D Studio, Maya) get the Power Book. Also I like how the OS works is a real user friendly.
If you are going to use more mathematical programs, or games (such AutoCAD, Sketch UP) get the ) 9200."

Final Cut and DVD Studio Pro are both good pieces of software, and those two alone would tempt me to get a Mac. However, I'm still able do the same things on a PC- sometimes better. I suspect support for Blu Ray DVD or HD DVD is coming soon for both, but it wouldn't suprise me to see better support on the PC. Mac support for WM9 HD isn't good- I've yet to see a file play correctly. But, then again, that could have been done intentionally by Mr. Softy. An i9200 can play them well.

Photoshop mostly runs faster on PC, except for a few things. I think that comparison made a few years ago where Apple was saying how they were much faster than PC was on just on a conversion process- I think it was RGB to CYMK. There were alot of other anomalies to that comparison, but that's a whole 'nother subject.

Which one did your girlfriend have, the current one or the last one?
she had both the new version and the older one.

I did compare the two, not side by side, but about 1 hour apart.

I love the construction of the Mac: light, solid, awesome screen hinges, small for its screen size. My Dell 9200 WUXGA on the other hand is pretty solid as well, better than all the Toshibas, HP/Compaq, all plastic Sonys, etc. But it is a bit thicker (+0.6 in) and a little deeper than the G4. Finding a backpack for it is a challenge. It is also about 0.8 lbs heavier than the Mac.

Pluses for the Dell: the 9200 WUXGA screen is brighter and clearer, and screen text is quite a bit sharper. Also, the palm rest feels a lot cooler than the Mac's. But the Mac is at least a year old, so perhaps a new design with a newer screen is around the corner.

Physical traits aside, if you have a preference for OS X over XP, Linux or vice versa, that would be a huge determining factor. I personally like OS X, but I can't use it for work, so it's out of the question for me. Still, I love the way Apple designs their products.
