Also, just to clarify the OS installation was just one of the problems. I had a laptop that didnt have a bettery that would work. And I no one was helping me get a new part until today when the store manager actually got me a battery from one of the pieces that was on display (that dont have the battery hooked up). I dont know what prompted him to do that but Im sure if hes reading this forum I dont have any better words but say "THANK YOU".

Also regarding the budget thing Im now looking at taking a laptop in the range of 1300-1400 tops. The 7405 was a beast in terms of processing capacity and Im looking for something that has the same computing power or better. I was going through the DELL website and they do have quite some intresting models. Again at this point I WILL NOT BUY A LAPTOP without doing all my ground work. LESSON LEARNT.

Thank you forum.
I wonder if Gateway has support issues because they're still in transition from buying eMachines. Having to pay for tech support stinks, but I guess you have to make up for the inexpensive price somewhere.

I'm still kind of tossed up about getting the service plan. Laptops are much more difficult to fix due to their integrated nature and are probably more prone to break because of that fact. The price we pay for the convenience of portability, I guess.

Anywhere, here are some links to more laptops. Good luck with your future purchase - I hope you have a more pleasant experience with it!

And yeah, the reason this gateway has an athlon is because it's just the emachine m68xx series renamed under them and still built by Arima. I wonder if any battery from a m68xx computer will work?

I just had my 6805 replaced with a 7405gx due to the hinge and I kind of regret not getting that HP machine since I find I don't play games as much as I thought, or at all, and that larger HD and faster CPU would have been nice.
Just trying to understand and Please help me if you know some details about this.

How easy or how feasible is it to change the Graphics card on a laptop. What would be the criteria to select one based on the model. Does a card manufacturer for example like ATI make standard cards for all laptop models or do their cards change with each laptop make and model.

Thats so true. I miss my 7405GX already. I sincerely wish if there was a good support model for this make and model. I really wonder though what would it take to have a support model if they are setup in the first place to have a support/service plan.

Does it really get that messy to have a department, heck for that matter just 2 people fully trained and resourcefull to be a part of the Support group. That way 10 people can take the call for basic troubleshooting and then 2 people can take care of all the advance know hows of the system for indepth troubleshooting....

I wonder when this will be possible but meanwhile my feeling is that a good model is losing out on market due to a simple org structure and support background.

Cheers

Most notebooks do not have replaceable GPUs. There are a few now that do, but they are very expensive. You won't find anything near your $1300-$1400 range you can do that with.
