Load temps of 100C for ATI R9600

first off i have a i8600 with 1.6 dothan and MR9600Pro Turbo
i was playing Need For Speed Undergound 2 with both fans set to MAX on fangui

the CPU never gets over 65C
but the GPU was being reported as 100C by fangui
the game was fine and all, no noticeable slow downs or artifacts
but it worries me alot to have it at 100C while on load

is this normal

what are peoples load temps for the GPU of a MR9600

Do not worry, it is not uncommon for some revisions of this card to record temperatures in excess of 100c in some high-load games. The heat tolerance is higher than this so don't stress it.

what would be the maximum operating temperature for the 9600
100c + is awfully high

would drivers make a difference, currently running the Dell drivers, would Omega make a temp decrease

Omegas have been reported to help lower temps a bit, but don't go expecting miracles from a simple driver change. And trust me, it is not uncommon for 100C+, the cards are rated past 120C, but the system will automatically shut down once temps reach a pre-programmed maximum of I think 110C. Don't sweat it.

As sakor1 implied, don't worry about the temperatures, and just enjoy the 8600.

lol and if you are up to it, you can enjoy half life 2, and at same time brew a cup of coffee!
can anyone play half life 2 without it eventually overheating and crashing? playing call of duty at 1600x1200 i can get about 10 minutes before it crashes.

hl2? i have it at the widescreen mode, decent screen size, and highest for everything else like texture, shadow, and i only have 64mb...i say thats pretty damn good! awesome game

I play Half-life 2 and CS:S for hours on my i8600 and the highest temps I've seen are about 85C.

what resolution do you play at? anything under 1920x1200 in 16:10 mode for me (on wuxga display on 8600) makes the screen tiny and surrounded all around by black.

I also have a WUXGA however I play at 1280x800 and it fills the whole screen. I believe there is a setting somewhere to make it "strech", I'm not sure where though. Anyone know where the setting is?

this is exactly what i need to know.. my problem isn't half life specific though, so maybe the option is located elsewhere.

I believe the setting is in the BIOS as well as in the Display Properties page...I can't remember off hand as I no longer have a 9600 PT GPU, but I recall resizing it to 'stretch' games.

Er, how do you guys know the temps of your hardware...is that some program you put on your machine or can I find the temps somewhere? I'm curious to know what temp my machine is...but have no idea how to do that.

Do a search for FanGUI.

The latest version for 8600s is 2.20, and I suggest enabling 'Observer Mode' so you can get familiar with the various temperatures before messing with the fan settings.

Be warned - when you have FanGUI installed, you'll spend an inordinate amount of time looking at the various temperatures instead of working or enjoying your laptop

fangui --- do a search

Whoever is saying 100 C is ok is nuts ..
Anything beyond 80 C is in the danger zone IMHO

And you're basing this on...?

Oh come on Monkey
I just use some common sense here. Most systems self shut themselves down in the 95-99 C range.. So temps of 100 C and above I believe is crazy ok.
Just my opinion.
