Explorer.exe -re-install windows?

Thread Starter
I have a Gateway solo 5300 with Me on it....for now & I can't get it to start up...I get this error with Explorer.exe & Windows needs to be reloaded. I tried safemode to modify ini files but can't get to a command prompt using F8...not a option listed only normal, safe, logged, step....and I dont have a floppy drive either. Also I try to boot from the Dvd but it doesn't read it...& yes it is set to check CD first. Has my Dvd gone bad my problem? I tried another harddrive, but it wouldn't do anything after posting but a blank screen. Help???? Anyone have a Dvd for a solo 5300 cheap? I also tried a cdrw/Dvd from my other Gateway, but the bios did not even see it at all....(from a different model gateway laptop)

you could copy your OS install to a bootable hard drive.

EDIT: make sure the CD is bootable also. Not all windows CDs are bootable.

Quick question... Have you made any upgrades to the laptop right before (or close to the time) it started acting up? I upgraded the ram in my laptop and 1wk later it decided to start conflicting and it wouldnt start up unless I removed the 1GB ram chip.
