I have a few days with my 9200 with 1 GB RAM, but what is bother me, is that Windows XP Pro SP2 is sucking my memory, I just installed a few programs, about 15 at top, but when I check what programs are running in the prosses label I saw that all this process are eating 377 MB of my memory, is there a way that I stop from loading some of the running process?

Under the processes tab in task manager, you can sort by memory usage. Do this to determine which programs are using all that memory.

use 'msconfig' from the run command and you can disable alot of the useless startup items.

Did you format your drive and do a fresh install of windows yet? Dell sends out their machines loaded with crap you dont need. If you havent formted yet you should, thatll fix your problem. Make sure to have a disk with all the latest drivers before you do though. Also check out the Dell FAQ in this forum for instructions on how to do this.

If you dont want to format (it may be a little confusing for the first timer) then go through add/remove programs in the control pannel and uninstall all the programs you dont need.

After that do what jrbryner said and disable those programs in msconfig.

My guess is that it's not SP2 that's sucking your memory (or the 9200, for that matter). It's probably your AV software.

My i8600 uses about 180mb RAM at idle. Things that I deleted out of my tray were the Dell Alerts, AOL, Dell Quickset and I run AVG Antivirus vs Norton or McAffee.

Is your laptop running particulary slow? If not, then don't worry about it. Windows will use more memory if you have more memory, even if you have the same number of programs running. It just expands itself based on what is available, it will load more into memory because you can handle it. If your machine is running fine, then don't worry. If it is running slowly, then you can try to eliminate programs you don't need.

Do you have Bluetooth? The drivers for that take a ton of memory.

Also, do you have the Intel wireless NIC? Even though Windows XP can handle things on its own, the standard Intel driver install inclused all this Intel PROSet Wireless stuff that's totally unneeded as far as I can tell, and takes up a lot of RAM as well. (I need to find a driver install that's just the driver, no more.)

Finally I found what was slowing me down, after I format and re install Windows I check the running process (120MB very well) then, I install de Antivirus (Panda Titanium 2005) and then check up again the running process (320MB very bad) so I uninstall that version and install the Panda Titanium 2004 (I use this version before upgrade to the 2005, and works very) and now I check up again the running process and then a good number 190MB. So please guys don't install the 2005 version it sucks.
