700M vs X300

I go back and forth between the 700M and the X300. I Like the X300's smaller size but not it's high price, smaller discounts, and slower cpu. I need less than 12" wide, preferably less than 11", for moving map/gps, email, and Excel.

Any one else go through this evaluation?

I have a 700m for home use, and have had an opportunity to briefly use the x300 at work.

The X300 is definitely sleeker - much thinner and lighter. However, you lose the optical drive and the battery sticks -way- out the back. The screen is smaller and the resolution is pretty low. The keyboard is excellent.

The 700m is thicker, but otherwise about the same dimensionally when you account for the big battery on the x300. It also has the advantage of having the optical drive built in. The screen is brighter and the resolution higher - the wide screen aspect is also cool. The keyboard is more cramped.

Both machines are pretty sturdy, but I'd say the x300 is a bit sturdier. The X300 will be more portable if you don't need an optical drive - and less portable if you do. I -really- like the 700m, but probably would have went with the x300 if the price were the same simple due to the 'cool' factor.

i have both systems and i would definitely say go with the x300. the machine is not that much slower, very quick for its size, and very very very light and sturdy. the resolution is only lower because its not a widescreen. the x300 is also much slimmer and they actually fit perfectly inside a 12.1" sleeve that can easily slip into your backpack or carrying case - you wont even notice it. if you are worried about a integrated optical drive, which you wont be using most of the time, get the mediabase. you can integrate the system with the mediabase and carry it around like a 5lb computer. you can add a second battery into the mediabase as well as an optical drive and a floppy drive. a very very very nice all around computer.

Thank you for the comparisons. Optical is not important other than so many come with it. The internal Blue tooth option of the x300 will be more useful.

Looking at Dell's prices, with the $300 discount, I could get a 700m 1.6 ghz 512/60 for $1198. Or pay another $100 for the 1.8 ghz cpu, which still leaves money for an extra battery.

The x300 would cost $1579 for a 1.4ghz 128/60 and I would need to spend another $100 for more after market memory.

So is the pound lighter and inch narrower x300 worth $300-400 more the a 700? When I figure that out I will buy - or Dell come up with a different set of discounts.
