External hard drives

Thread Starter
Are external USB2 / 1394 HDs generally bootable or not? All I've heard from googling is that Firewire drives are bootable on macs with native firewire, but no mention of PCs which suggests to me that they're not. Can anyone tell me for sure? Thanks

I think it's dependant on the BIOS, and from what i understand Sager's BIOS doesn't support this, thought i may be wrong.

most PC BIOS's do not support firewire boot (and very few support USB HD boot).

Linux supports firewire CD boot, but not HD - that I know of.

Laptops will not boot either, at least not Sagers (and most others).

It's too bad, as it would really give MS a sock square on the jaw (as it would be incredibly easy to alternate OS's).

I think it's a conspiracy. It doesn't take anything to boot from ANY firewire device (it is meant to replace ATA and SCSI after all) but the powers that be do not like Apple nor wish to see their products thrive, methinks.

...and I'm a PC user.
