Sager 5680 - one year later review. - Page 3

I'm in the same boat, but I'm looking at the Dell M1210. I really want something light this time. The 5680 is just too heavy to carry around everyday. I'm now willing to sarcifice performance for weight in a laptop platform.

Im an old timer on these boards..ive had my 5660 upgraged to a 5680 and ive had a few shut off problems while moving the laptop while it was on, ive got the cracks on the hinges also, yet, it still runs and runs and runs. Getting the back replaced soonish because of the cracks.

But, my next laptop will be a much lighter one...over time, it does get to u if youre the mobile type person. 7lbs or less for me next time, ideally 6 and below, but i dont know if any laptop with a dedicated video (nvidia/ati) is that light, with centrino.

asus w3j

by looking at the new clevo models, it seems like the build quality of the case has gotten better but the electronics inside are less reliable

damn i just ordered a sager 6630 because after reading around a lot they were suppose to be 1 of the best, now i read this thread and i wonder if i should cancel my order with discountlaptops

no I wouldn't cacel it, 6630 does not have the high heat parts crammed into a small space like the D900T, there is not 220w flowing through the system

here is a review:

I got my 5680 at the end of 2003. I was using it as my main comp up until about a year ago when the video chip died on me. I'm just now getting around to fixing it, 500 bucks for a new motherboard and a 3 month warranty.

I'm with you guys, cosmetically its not the prettiest anymore, but i never had any performance problems. Half-life 2 and Doom 3 looked great. GTA San Andreas ran alright. Granted The Desktop I built after the vid chip died ran them better, but i was always happy with its performance.

I do have a little cracking at the hinges. You can see tiny lines where its cracking, but nothing else yet. Super Glue helped that? I might try that, just have to be careful not to superglue it shut. lol

I might consider selling it when i get it back, it is nice having that kind of power in a mobile machine though.

Now all i have to worry about is getting it back from Sager. They told me last week that the first mobo they put it failed testing, and it was 2 to 3 business days until they would get another one in. So that should be this week. I hope they get it back to me soon.

How do you guys think the 5680 stacks up to current gen machines? Obviously there have been some big Processor improvements, as well as new and better video card technology. But i think overall its still a pretty powerful machine and hangs in there fairly well with the new boys.

I agree with u fully. Ive got the cracks on the back of my laptop, and it overheated (got it late 2k2 early 2k3) a few days ago and shut down.

I noticed ALOT more fan action but didnt work on it till the shutdown.

The sink was caked with dust. but i bent the cpu pins while taking it out.
Ill get her up and running and use her for a dvr or something...not sure yet..but i m looking at the dell Dell m1210s intently.

I think they do ok, theyre showing their age, but for basic stuff, man its overkill still with that powerful cpu and gpu.

Its heavy and im sort of tired of that now..i used to transfer that sucker with me everywhere but after a while it got old

Batterylife was tragic also. I got better battery life with win 2kpro than xp..go figure.

All in all, its still a good machine. Ill be building a kill all desktop, butstill wanted a laptop...a more portable one so im not sure how ill set up my stuff. Should be fun.

Too bad sager didnt have anything like that m1210 or id be right there in line.
