I'm gonna pop in a stick of 2700 corsair valueram 256 and let you know how it works.

It was only like $40ish with shipping from newegg! I'll have to put it in myself though, no biggy

Btw gf got the laptop and loves it... definitely won a ton of brownie points with that one!

But now I miss MY... i mean HER... laptop

I installed a 256MB stick of PY PC2700 and it works great. I got it at staples a couple of weeks ago when they had the rebates going on PNY RAM. Great deal!!! Lappy runs faster now!!! Woohoo!!!

I hate to upset the party here but my M35x-s149 has been to the factory 4 times and they can't seem to get the problem fixed. My suggestion to anyone that has this computer is take out the battery and run it only on the ac adaptor for a few days. There is a problem with the system board that keeps cutting out the ac adaptor connection making the computer run only on the battery. The Toshiba power program says that the computer (with the battery connected) is "online discharging". When in this state the battery is being used up like there was no ac connection. I've had 3 "system boards" (probably motherboards)put in, the solder joint re-soldered, the casing changed, the ac adaptor changed. When running only on the ac adaptor you will notice the problem because the computer shuts off, but if you have the battery in you might never notice this until the battery gets completely discharged. When the laptop is turned off it will charge the battery sometimes (especially when new).

hmmm interesting problem, i cant say i have ever heard of this before. it is a good thing for those with the machine to check out to see if it is widespread. otherwise it may just be your machine and you being really unlucky.... anyways lets hope it is isolated and they are able to fix it properly.

Type in the "search" option on this site for "M35x-s149" and see how many are having this problem or google the web for "online discharging" . You can narrow the problem a little yourself by just feeling the warmth of a few parts. If you see that there are only 2 green lights on the front of the computer (instead of three) go to the "toshiba power management " utility and see what the state of the battery is. If it says "online discharging, feel the ac converter if it is cool to the touch then your computer is running only on the battery (even though the lights on the front of the computer says different). It is possible that your connection in the back of the computer where the ac adaptor is pluggen in, has come unsoldered. You can tell this if you can get the adaptor to work by turning the plug where the ac adaptor is plugged into the computer( the 3 lights should all come on in the front of the computer). if you can get the ac power to run the computer for a minute or so then pull the plug out of the rear of the computer and feel it ....if it is Hot are very warm then you have a short here if it is not hot then you have a problem with the "system board" ...as Toshiba calls it. I've had both.

umm okay i dont actually own a m35x, but i was more commenting for those who do, that they should check their machine as this seems to be a pretty serious issue and would need to be addressed if it is in their machine. thank you for elaborating on wht to look for though as i a sure that it will help those who are looking. by the way you were right in your assumptio that "system board" is really just what the motherboard is being called.

either way this aspect of the thread really belongs in the toshiba peer help and support part of the forums not the toshiba general section.... and since i notice that you have it there it would be most logical to keep it confined to the one thread so as to keep answers and replies to it more together for everyone interested.

Thread Starter
Being the one that originally started this thread (back around Dec 2004) AND because my daughter's machine IS experiencing some issues with the battery and charging - AND because I have read other posts regarding this issue and similar symptoms - I have to say that this looks like a manufacturing defect related to this model and maybe Toshibas in this particular line.

I've seen this brought up in other threads so I won't belabor the point - in my daughter's case its the standard weak connection at the entry point of the AC plug. Wiggle till it works syndrom.......many brands have this issue.

I'm just biding my time till it goes in for the first repair - or should I say till it stops working and my daughter is willing to part with it.

Mr. Fidget, I stand corrected, thanks for the advice. How can I argue with someone that has so many posts and so much green.
