Conflicting driver information

Here goes:

I see people on this forum using the 4.12 Catalyst drivers. I thought these were desktop only. Another Sager forum states this as well.

Can these Catalyst drivers be used to update video drivers on the 8890??

You can get versions of the catalyst 4.12 drivers from various websites that have been modified to run on laptops; that's what most of us do, seeing as how Sager stopped supplying new drivers for our system quite awhile back.

driverheaven.net provides tools to modify drivers downloaded directly from ATI, while omegadrivers.net has specially tweaked drivers for improved game performance that work on all radeon cards. I'd suggest the later, as they're really great drivers from a really nice guy. I believe ATI has considered sanctioning the drivers, they're that well-made.

Hal:

Thanks for the reply, that was informative. Is there really that big of a difference between Omega and ATI. I've stayed away from Omega only because I've never used them and unfamiliar with how to install.

I am assuming I would have to uninstall the ATI drivers before loading Omega?

Well, it depends on what you want. Omegas are much, much better for gaming, but slightly worse for general use, while the ATIs are slightly better for general use, but not nearly as good for gaming. At least, that's what they say; to tell the truth, I've never really noticed any general performance decrease between the Omega's and ATIs, but all of the extra options and tweaks the O's open up and the extra smoothness/frames in games make them worth it to me.

Yeah, I'd probably uninstall the old ones before putting in the new ones; they should overwrite fine, but it's always better to take that extra 3 minute step and be sure.

hal,

i believe the preception of the omega drivers being worse for general use stems only from using them with the old bios versions (pre v10). i am and have been using omegas for everything, especially gaming, and since the bios update, they work great for everything. but, that's just my experience.

Bud:

After I flash my bios, I was thinking about trying the omegas. I am still getting some stuttering when playing games, even after installing the Catalyst 4.12
