3d Cad

Thread Starter
Hi all,
Im doing 3D solid modeling work on +/20 meg files. 3D solids, nurbs surfacing / morphing and some rendering. Industrial product design stuff using Think3 software. (similar to but better than Solidworks) Likely not as intense as 3D studio or Maya animation style rendering. These are solid model parts and assembly files. I have been reading that the NV Quadro graphics cards are better for this sort of thing. Does anybody have any direct experience using a Radeon 9700 in this environment? Im trying to decide if the jump to a system with the NV quadro cards is worth the extra $. The options are much more limited in this department. Seems like the Dell M60 or Alienware are the only few options out there.
I do like the Sager 3790 and it seems like a good value but will I miss not having the Quadro card?
Thanks

howdy

see my sig - that's what I use for most of my CAD work (desktop or the laptop). I don't do much 3d in CAD, but I do use a lot of Sketchup (3d) on both machines. I'll tell you this- I don't have problems in CAD in 2d, but things will slow down a bit in 3d. Its just not a rendering/ workstation class card. From what I hear, the Nvidias are much much better at OpenGL and that sort of thing than the ATIs.

I have an ATI 9700 in my lappy currently. I also have AutoCAD. My laptop runs the program very well. There is lag after typing in commands that do rendering or other video hungry commands. In 3D, the object looks nice and the shading is well done.
Here are some examples of my work when I am bored.

Aaron, if you are doing highly detailed work, large files, etc., I would personally recommend the nvidia (even though I love ATI). It depends on how seriious you are. You will get by with the 9700, but I couldn't say how long.

What notebooks would you recommend for CAD-purposes?

I heard that the x600 64mb is about the same performance than the ATI 9700 128mb is that true?
I am also looking for a laptop to use 3D CAD.
I am between the fujitsu N6010 or the ACER 1800

CAD package I use

Currently I am using RHINO 3D CAD. I use it on the Dell laptop that I have and on the 3 Silicon Graphics desktops that I own. This week I will receive my AW 7700 and will also install RHINO on that system too.

I currently teach 3D CAD here at he university.
