go to the keyboard perference and change chage the controls around so the hardware options require the use of the fn key

and to the OP: use iscroll2 instead of sidetrack because it gives you the function of the new powerbook scroll pads and it is completly free unlike side track.

I don't use the function keys enough to justify setting it that way. It's much more convenient to use the keys for brightness and volume, etc., which is why I've never changed it.

haha.....yes how ironic...

First off..I want to say excellent review. I am think about getting a mac for college this year and the Sony S260 was my other choice but that reflective screen is nice but not so nice outdoors where there is alot of relection. So it would be nice in this dark apartment I am living in if I were staying here 24/7 but I would like to take it out.....and show the WORLD!!..lol...

I am also concerned about the 12inch screen myself. From time to time...I may want to work on photoshop, and I don't know if I will be able to plug it into a monitor at school unless I get an LCD screen...but in terms of writing paper...is it ok? I mean...I have a 19inch Viewsonic right now...and the resolution the same as the 12inch...and I just starting wearing glasses but I am near sighted so I only need glasses to see afar...(especially at night-lol).....I multitask...word.....msn messenger...web browsers, and getting 3-4hours battery life is excellent..but it isn't that I want them side by side like having a widescreen so this 12inch should do me good right?...

one more thing, I am also concerned about that heat spot on the lower left hand corner of the palm rest. I don't know..its either this ibook or the 12inch powerbook..but the white color, as you said makes it easier locating keys right b4 you go to bed..or as soon as you wake up...much easier...

Once again...nice review.....Can it play GTA4 Vice city!!!...??probably the only game I will play on it..Thanks for trying to help me out with my Airport Express printer problem

Edit: well..Photoshop...once every blue moon....but I guess its between the 12inch ibook or the PB..and really..I don't see any difference really except for processor speeds..L2 Cache seems similar..(512kb?)...heard Tiger is soon set to be released....heard that from notebookreview.com as Amazon is having preorders of it now...

i personally don't mind writing/typing on my iBook for hours on end. i do prefer to use an external display for graphics oriented stuff as u had noted. i plug it into my 19" CRT and work away. i also use screen spanning doctor (SSD) to give my iBook the same spanning abilities as the powerbooks have. it allows u to run your external display at a higher resolutions beyond the 1024x768 native resolution of the iB/PBs.

but as u noted, i'm not bothered by the fact that i can't view 2 documents side by side, i just haven't had the need to when i'm mobile. if i've ever bumped into the need to it's been remedied by my ability to use SSD and an external monitor. from what i've heard the iBook's are supposed to be a bit better at heat, while the PBs get a bit warmer due to the aluminum conducting and holding heat moreso than the plastic of the iBooks.

the heat created by the HD has never been intolerable IMO. the only times it gets noticeable, as in possibly distracting, is when i'm throwing something heavy at it like video encoding. for what u have described as your type of use, i'd only expect it to get warm at most.

damnit, just read the manual, forgot ta calibrate the battery. I had it plugged i for a while, but the plug was taking forever ta turn green. How long does first full charge take?

It gets to 80 percent in 2 hours...the rest of the way takes at least 2 or 3 hours more.

You can calibrate the battery any time...it's basically so the computer can estimate more accurately how fast it will charge and discharge.

Okay, I've got a question... I need a portable notebook for gernal internet and w/p use, with a spot of Photoshop and Dreamweaver action thrown in too, and I'm very very tempted by the 12inch iBook, but there's this bit of me holding back (mainly because I've got all the software for my PC and I don't want to have to start again)... so I was wondering whether anyone can point me in the direction of A GOOD ALTERNATIVE FOR THE iBOOK - in terms of portability, usability (& sexiness) and so on and so forth?

If your software is legitimate, you can usually contact the company and they'll send you replacement CDs for Mac.

I think Macromedia's disks are hybrids, though.

The Sony S series. I am trying to get the previous model 360 because the new Sonoma chipset cuts back on battery life and heard there is a heating issue with the S380/480

Cheers! I'll check out the Sony S series asap... any other suggestions? And any other tips to watch out for (overheating etc) as I'm a tad naive in this department!

Been using the VAIO S28GP (equivalent to s260 ) for about 6 months now

In a shell slightly bigger that a nut - best thing about it is the brilliant wide screen, light weight and size. Also its somewhat stylish.

What I find annoying - the short battery life (3 hours max with constant use WIFI off), the loose battery connection (you can sometimes loose power if you jiggle it too much). Also occasionally after powerups, all sound is lost from the speakers to be replaced with a squeak necessitating a reboot. The hard touch pad buttons are unpleasant to use especially with tasks like dragging. Power management seems buggy at times.

So altho its a pretty good laptop, its far from perfect. Hard to find a better one tho for this size. The Apple12 inch does sound tempting but heh, its a mac.

So I've been thinkin bout replacing the vaio.

Models that look good so far (on paper):
Acer 8104
Samsung X-50

triadone,

I am considering buying a 12" iBook as a travel/class companion since the video card fried in my current laptop. I installed a slot load DVD burner in my current laptop. My question is this: Can I just replace the combo drive in the iBook with my DVD burner?

what model is the burner? i'm guessing it's either a panasonic/matsushita or pioneer since those are the only 2 slot loading brands i'm aware of. it would have to be the 12.7mm standard size and not the ultra thin 9.5mm version, but yes there shouldn't be a problem. just be advised that u'll void your warranty doing that work, and if you're gonna crack it open u might as well install a 5400 or 7200 rpm drive in it while u r at it. it's not an easy install so make it worth your time if u can.

another question...

my roommate has a 14" iBook G4 that he says gets 5-6 hrs of battery life under regular (word-processing, web surfing, etc.) That was part of my reason for considering an iBook as a replacement, although your review of the 12" says that the smaller model gets 3.75 hrs. Don't get me wrong, that is still decent, but not the 5-6 i was imagining. Is it a smaller battery maybe? Does the screen dim to help conserve power?

I was really picturing the 12" iBook as something i could just stuff in my bag and run to class, to friends' apartments, meetings, plane trips, etc. and never have to hunt for power outlets
