Which 9200 panel do you have? - Page 7

rename the file to leave out the -
Untill I did that it didn't work for me. Sadly enough I'm stuck up with the infamous w4554 and have requested a replacement.

Weird. I've never had a problem with "-" in a command name.
Wow, if that's the case then the W4554 WUXGA screen is unusable. Whoever wants to keep that must have a very "weird" eye sight

The spakle in the T4976 is very annoying on white background. I also have the crackling sound on the LCD panel. Definitely will try to exchange for a better screen.

T4976 has as much sparkle as the highly rated Dell FPS2000 21" LCD that I've been gaming on for a year and half.

You notice it on light screens if you think about it.

The W4554 has such a pronounced sparkle it's almost like having a layer of frost or ice on the screen - it will make a holographic effect that makes your eyes go crosseyed.

The nice thing about the T4976 is that it does not have the glare that I see on those "wonderful" Sony and HP "extra bright" screens.

I could use those to apply my lipstick in the morning.

I'll take the slight sparkle only noticeable on white backgrounds.

What happens if I missed the 21 day window?

I have a W4554 that was sent on 12/16/2004
Do I still have a chance for exchange of screen?

I haven't talked to anyone at Dell yet.

I talked to a Dell rep about my screen problem. Mine was sent on the 17th of December. She is trying to find out if she can get me a replacement that is guaranteed to be "sparkle" free. She said that I shouldn't worry about the 21 day period. I did call a few days before my period was over, though. I'm sure if you called right now they might overlook it.
My case might be special, though. I have certain mitigating factors, such as I called before the 21 day period, I have an EPP 3 year warantee, I complained my head off, ect. Just call and see what they say. Good luck!

Well I have loaded up Knoppix and despite my invoice part list saying I have WXGA (note I don't have a UXGA screen but standard XGA instead) LCD with part no W5411 (i.e Samsung) Knopipix tells me I have "LPL0000" which if I'm not mistaken is the notorious LG panel that people hate!

That would explain why it lacks brightness and has a horrid sparkle effect.

Will call Dell now that I have some proof...

From a recent desktop LCD review at Tom's Hardware :

"while sparkling is less of a problem, it's still inevitable. It's a fault that Philips and LG have always had in common with their respective LCDs."

T4976 -- Hate it! Inexcusable blunder by Dell for such a magnificent machine. Trying to get it replaced. Dell is sending a refurbished LCD replacement kit. God knows what that kit contains.

Note: My packing slip said W5411, but the system came with LG instead.

My packing slip says I have W5412, but when booting the Knoppix CD, it reads it as a SEC5557
Made my day !! Love the laptop !! (My first)
Hmm are you sure about this? I JUST had my LG XGA replaced because of lack of brightness and sparkle effect. They were nice enough to replace it with the same screen as yours (Knoppix states SEC5557 even though the box it came in said Y4014). However even though it is better than my previous LG it still has some sparkle and lacks punch with the brightness. In addition although they gave me a more expensive monitor for free I don't really like the extra resolution as everything is so uncomfortably small (not sure how to change the DPI...anyone?).

Well considering that people think that my replacement is a good monitor yet my eyes tell me otherwise, I will probably organise to return the laptop tomorrow after playing with it a bit tonight. Then back to the drawing boad in buying a new laptop and this time I'm leaning towards the Xbrite and ultrabrite screens.

See the first page of this thread. SEC5557 is the Samsung part number. Y4014 is the Dell part number for the same LCD.

Edited to say that if you were expecting a reflective screen like the XBrite, then you're probably going to be disappointed no matter what Dell sends you. All of their screen have anti-glare coatings, but the Samsung is the brightest and best of the bunch.

Edited again to say, check this out:

Go to your laptop desktop (LOL), right click, select Properties, select Settings Tab, click Advanced button, change DPI setting to Large size (120 DPI) or to a custum setting of your choice.

Knoppix bootable cd

I got a 9200 with a y4014. Screen looks terrible though. I downloaded the file KNOPPIX_V3.6-2004-08-16-EN.iso, burned to a disk, but my pc will not boot off of it. I set my cd drive as bootable and even set my c drive as not bootable. It will boot up off of my xp disk. Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong or point to where I can find out. I looked at the disk and it is on there.

Make sure you burn it as an ISO image. If you just burn it as a file, you get a coaster.

iso image

Well, I am up to 3 coasters. I am using the sonic record now that came with the pc. I clicked the create bootable disk and selected the iso image although iso was not one of the options. When I tried to boot up using the disk, it says missing operating systems. Any sugestions?

Sorry, I used Nero, and it was a piece of cake.

If you want to walk on the wild side, try get-edid as described earlier in this thread. But I seem to be one of the few people to get it to work for some odd reason.
I have the T4976 WXGA+ LG Philips. It has some sparkle on green and white (about equivalent to my D800). The issue with the sparkle on the 17 inch monitor is occupies my whole field of view. Thus I feel a little quise. There is some light bleed from the top and bottom (black screen, brighness up all the way, and lights out). Overall this screen is fine. I am going to go to fry's in a little bit to pick up another 512MB PC2700 So-Dimm and will check out their laptops again.
Rabid Bunny
PS What is all this issues with making a bootable CD for get-edid. I just opened a dos prompt. Make it full screen (alt-Enter) and ran it fine. I have done this on XP and XP Pro without issue.

Found it

Thanks dellbert, it is the y4014.017wu. Not the greatest in my estimation. I am going to survey this thread now that I know what I have. Your get-edid worked like a charm.

Th a nks, Troy

resolution

When buying this I did not realize I had to run at 1920x1200. I am currently at 1280x800 and that is fine for what I do. This display shrinks the screen at other resolutions such as 1440x900. Is this the same with all the screens or just the one that I have? I just purchased a 19" mag lt982s for under $400. It is much brighter than the y4014 I have on this.
