Hi troyd1,

It seems the two of us are the only ones that still have issues with y4014. I still see considerable sparkle in white backgrounds although I admit it is considerably brighter than my previous LG panel but it still falls short of other laptops.

Everyone seems to rave about the y4014 which I guess you would if you compare it to the bad panels but has anyone actually put it side by side with a different manufacturer's laptop and can take some pics for us?

I bought a 16" one from now defunct internetishop and I am sure it was brighter than this. The motherboard died a little while ago and it is getting fixed. When that happens, I will compare as memory is not always what you actually see.

Unfortunately, due to Dell's continuous screw-ups, I haven't had a chance to see a Y4014 yet. But it sounds like both of you might be happier with the Samsung WXGA+, especially if you don't like the WUXGA resolution. I currently have the Samsung WXGA+, and you can tell there's an anti-glare coating, but it's very bright, whites are very white, and I have to say that it's as good or better than any LCD I've had in my 20+ years of laptop use.

The panels with a reflective coating are another animal altogether. You either love or hate the reflectivity, but they are generally brighter, and colors look almost photographic.

dellbert,
I think you are right. I would personally prefer the XGA over the UXGA which Dell kindly exchanged my old XGA with. I just don't need all the extra screen space when web browsing (the thing I use the most) is so uncomfortable at 1920x1440.

What I can't understand is why virtually all the Dell's 9200 panels have such strong and obvious antiglare coatings. I don't really recall another laptop that you can see the coating so strongly to the point that true whites turn into a shade of grey (albeit I've only owned one other laptop in the last 3 years). Can anyone with lots of laptop experience confirm if Dell's antiglare coatings are indeed much more obvious than others? I'm off to the shops now to compare for myself.

I have become very unhappy with the Dell Screen comparing it to the other screens at Fry's. I might be doing an exchange, I just don't know yet. I know my 9200 was a bargin, but the screen really is one of the most important components. I will need to work with my 9200 over the weekend to figure out if I can live with my T4976 WXGA+ LG Philips.

PS At least the memory was a good price. 512 MB PC2700 So-Dimm (GEIL Golden Dragon) 81.23 out the door at Bay Area's fry's, sale ends today 1/11/05.

Dell is saving 50+ bucks per unit using all these 2nd tier screens,
Its all about profit and it seems to me not about giving the customer the best like Sony does for example. The Sony VGN A190/290 sceen is the best. Sure you pay for it but you have a screen that is 2nd to none.

Could someone please help me figure out which screen I have. I am not an IT person, so I cannot figure out this DOS stuff and not comfortable going there. Is there an easier way. I have the UXGA part #W5412. From the posts I have read in this thread, it seems that I may have the Samsung, but have not idea what you all are talking about when it comes to checking in DOS. I am totally lost. Please respond in non-IT terms. Honestly, when I first received this laptop (my first), I did not notice the sparkle, but after reading about the sparkle, it became noticeable. Not sure if this was the "power of suggestion." Anyway the screen is not dark, and I do not experience any blurry fonts. I do have the microscopic size font issues but know now that that is attributed to the high resolution which my hubby and I had no idea would change things. I've had the runaround with DELL CC department. I guess I would have to send this laptop in, and start all over with the rebuild, lose the $300 coupon we used on the original order, and not have the guarantee that I would receive the coveted Samsung panel in the rebuild. Yes, the sparkle is distracting on white and light backgrounds, but something that I don't notice unless I am looking for it. It almost has like a 3D effect. Photos and graphics look very good. DVD's look okay too. Font size I had to adjust, and things seem to look better in Firefox. Thanks for your help. I really would like to know exactly which screen I received.

Sorry, azusaheart, there is no sure-fire non-technical test. It sounds like you probably got the Samsung, though. One thing you could try is this:

1) right click your desktop, choose properties
2) choose the desktop tab
3) set background to none, and set the color to bright green, hit apply

If you see a nice consistent green across the entire display, you have the Samsung.

If you see a shimmering sea of sparkles that makes you want to run out of the room, you have the LG.

I just got mine: Y4014 flawless, sweet.

BTW: My buyer ordered a 5400rpm drive and the wrong network card. Should he be able to get me a parts exchange from Dell's sales group ? I don't want to exchange the whole system since I got the display I wanted.

Dellbert, I am in the same boat as azusaheart but with the wxga screen, the check you mention would work for that???

Sure, why not?

Here's my guess as to what the issue is: LG applies their anti-glare coating in a random pattern, so you see strange shifting holographic shimmers when light is refracted by the coating material.

Samsung uses a more traditional grid pattern for the anti-glare coating, so you still get the traditional "screen door" effect, but no distracting holographic shimmers.

I picked a green background to test because the human eye is most sensitive to green. And because it's my favorite color

Delbert,
Thanks for the instructions for checking out the sparkle effect. I tried that bright green background, and I didn't want to run out of the room. I wear reading glasses too! Anyway, I hope that's a good sign. My laptop was ordered on 12/13 and we received it around 12/23. When I viewed the bright green, it's even, but looks like there is a piece of sheer silk in front of the color, not cloudy, but a shimmery, silkscreen effect. This is the best way I know how to describe it. It's not annoying, just different from my hubby's 8600 15." For our trouble DELL gave us a $200 off coupon for a flat panel monitor which we did order because I just can't stand how tiny the font is, and I mostly surf the web and work in Microsoft Word. The laptop is not going to be moved around anyway, only to take with us in our motorhome to view DVD's which look very nice with this resolution. So attaching a monitor to this machine is not a big portable issue with me. This laptop replaced my desktop. Anyway, what do you think I received, LG or Samsung? Thanks for all your help. Appreciate the thread. BTW, the view on this notebookforums looks fantastic. The dark background is very beautiful and outstanding. Ciao.

One more thing.

FYI, my daughter's boyfriend has the Sony 17" laptop. He saw my screen, and liked it. When I pointed out the silk effect, he wasn't sure he liked it then, but only when I pointed it out, and he was staring at it. He didn't notice it before that. I just thought that you all would find that interesting. He also said that after working on his Sony for a few hours, he gets kind of annoyed at his screen too, and has to take a break from it.

Definitely sounds like you got the Samsung, az. Enjoy it. And don't be envious of those shiny Sony screens. As Heinrich will tell you, they're only good for applying lipstick.

Hi all,

My apologies for posting this same question to two forums.

I am debating between the WUXGA and thw WXGA+. I plan to order soon. Is it still a bit of a gamble getting the WUXGA? I really don't have time to deal with Dell hassles (and I hate dealing with them). But it seems from some comments that people are getting the Samsung more consistently. Maybe that's not true. I wish there was a way to specify when ordering.

I guess I have to look at the side by side, and decide if I want the extra resolution or not, then decide to gamble or not!

Ideas?

You're the only one who can tell if it's ok or not. Don't worry about us. Some folks even liked the highly-sparkly W4554.
