LPL has been the prefix people have seen for panel made by LG Philips. Some people really like the LG WXGA+, though.

HMM the 9600 is interesting, is this just a bug of Knoppix? The 9200 is suppoed to have a 9700. It's probably a bug in Knoppix (anyone else?) Edinok, boot into Windows with a light background. Darken the room. Take a picture of the display - try to fill up the display (no keyboard) in the frame. Take it slightly off-center, like 10 degrees to either side, and put it up here.

If you look at the very first message in this thread the LPL0000 is the part number for the WUXGA that has problems. However, the WXGA LG may be spitting out the same number, which would be Dell number T4976. That is the screen that I have and I like it very much.

You can also go to the dell web site, under my account, and somewhere in there plug in your service code. Tell us what the dell part number says.

Delbert,
How do I do this?
It seems like overkill to have to download a 700MB ISO Knoppix image just to figure out which LCD you have, so I researched some possible alternatives. I was hoping to find a simple Win32 app that would spit out the information, but no such luck. However, here are a couple alternatives:

1) Burn a CD from the Ultimate Boot CD ISO image:

http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/

It's only 70MB or so. Boot the thing, and run the DOS version of ASTRA. It'll tell you which LCD you have. Of course, you could just build your own DOS boot disk and put a copy of ASTRA on there to do the same thing.

I went to that site, and couldn't figure it out. I clicked on a link, and it said that you shouldn't mess with this if you don't have experience. Not sure which link I was supposed to click on to download this ultimate boot thing.

azusaheart, first I would say that if the display bugs you, then return the system and move on with life. Otherwise, you'll have to live with this little angst eating away at you for the couple of years you own the system, and eventually it'll drive you into a cycle of depression, despair, and general disgruntlement.

Second, go and find yourself a pimply-faced geek who would be happy to read this thread and jump through the hoops necessary to determine the LCD maker if you're really curious. These geeks are everywhere. There are so many in my neighborhood, I'm practically scraping them off my windshield.

I wouldn't recommend that you try to boot Knoppix or UBCD if you're not comfortable at a command prompt, for example.

I want just to add my (sad) contibution to this list. I've a T4976 (get-edid) WXGA display (LPL0000 with knoppix) and really find it ugly. It sparkles a lot but above all when you look a point right in front of you the far border of the screen looks quite dark, as if the viewing angle is very poor.

Trying to obtain exchange or refund but had not luck til now.

I have recieved 2 different 9200's with the Samsung X4766 WXGA+ display. Even though both displays are the same model, they are quite different in appearance. With Dellbert's help, I was able to identify that both of my screen were the same model. They looked so much different from one another that I couldnt tell by looks alone.

1st Samsung X4766 WXGA is a little darker. It has very good contrast and the anti glare coating is hardly visible. Very little light leakage. Some backlighting visible at top of screen if you look hard enough. White colors are a little darker.

2nd Samsung X4766 is much brighter. The anti glare coating stands out. Images look a little more jagged. Whites are much much brighter. Constrast is good but colors dont seem as rich. Light leakage at bottom.

You know, now that I think about it, it may be impossible to tell your LCD maker using software. I originally found it very odd that Dell's part number was contained in the LCD's EDID structure. I figured that Dell must have adopted the manufactures part number as their own. But the more likely explanation is that the EDID information embedded in the display is *writable*, and those fools at Dell overwrite it with their own info. If that's the case, the only way to tell for sure is to take things apart. (Which, of course, we all do just before we return our system to Dell.)

Edited to say I checked into this a little more. It looks like there are two sections in the EDID structure: Monitor Vendor (the maker) and Internal Vendor (Dell). Knoppix reports Monitor Vendor information, and the ASCII string you see when dumping the EDID via get-edid is the Internal Vendor information.

It's probably the case that the manufacturer burns this information during assembly, but it's possible I suppose that Dell overwrites the Internal Vendor information themselves. In any case, I think the EDID information is probably reliable.

F7116 = Y4014

Just ran the get-edid-dos programme

I had a uk model so that might confirm why the F7116 was listed.

Anyway, regarding the screen after 3.5 weeks of using it.

Very very bright. Slight sparkle on white backgrounds. Hardly irritaing.

I now run the screen at half brightness because its so bright.

I've also got the F7116 listed on the invoice, ordered in Holland. However get-ided says it's the w4554, knoppix indicates LPL0000. The panel sparkles like crazy on white/light backgrounds. I feel like watching to my lcd-panel through a layer of ice.
I'm still in the process of getting Dell into action to replace it.

Don't rejoice just yet if anyone finds the F7116 listed on his invoice.....

What does dell support page show when you enter your service code?

I just investigated that, the dutch Dell site doesn't show any invoice-like info. It uses some kind of activex applet to show the systems config, but there's no list of part numbers. Nothing apart from the "default monitor" shows up.
When entering the code on Dell.com it says that it's unavailable for non-us purchases.

X4766 Con

looks good except for too much light leakage

I got F7116. I am very surprised that other people who got F7116, are happy with their display. It is awfully frosted, grainy and refective ( sparkled effect). I have asked for a replacement with Y 4014 samsung one. Still waiting for their reply. Otherwise I am going send it back. It is shame for dell to include these faulty LCD in their notebooks. Previously I owned a Inspiron 8500.

Using EyeRelief

Has anyone tried this yet? If you do use it, can you go back to default settings?

EyeRelief for LCDs

EyeRelief 1.00 is a small, simple and free Windows utility that provides improved legibility to high density LCDs, allowing larger font, icon, tool and taskbar sizes at native resolutions. Users with, e.g., SXGA+, UXGA and higher resolutions LCDs may find EyeRelief's desktop scaling a viable alternative to running at lower non-native resolutions.

Sorry to hear about all of the LG panels showing up in Europe. I've updated the original post to reflect the comments.

Now we know what Dell did with the US supply of these panels

Trying to move on.

I know I need to move on, you're right. I am trying, honestly. I guess I'm not 100% satisfied with my decision to keep this laptop, so before I make a decision to turn this laptop in with all the hassles it will now involve, I do feel I would like to know exactly what display I have. I am wondering why my packing slip says I have part# W5412, and when I went to the DELL site and entered my service tag info, it says I have the W4554, which according to this thread is supposed to be the worst of the worst. So what do I have? W5412 or W4554. This is my first laptop. I don't have much experience to know if I have a bad display or not. Without actually seeing the differences of the terms sparkly, sparkles or "screen door" effect look like, it is hard to access my situation. I certainly would love to see what a Y4014 looks like in comparison to what I am viewing. Not all of us on this forum are able to understand advanced technical information. If there is someone who would like to email me privately, and go over the steps for me to use the programs to discover what display I actually have, I would greatly appreciate it. I have been in DOS before, so I am not a complete idiot. TIA for your help.

azusaheart, I can tell you from personal experience that I received a system which Dell said shipped with a W5412, and it turned out to have a W4554. I've been going through a nightmare trying to get the correct display from them. Depending on who you ask, you may lose your return privilige if you fall outside the 21 day window, which you will if you go down the exchange route. That's why I'd recommend simply returning the system while you can if you're not 100% happy with the display.
