Previously I owned a Inspiron 8500.
As you can read on the first message.
F7116 can be sometimes LG Philips sometimes Samsung.
So some people with F7116 may have non sparkly Samsung.

Yes. Consider yourself lucky, nparrett. It seems like F7116 is running 50/50 Samsung/LG.

Such a dilemma.

I have such mixed emotions about it all. Without giving my life story, this laptop was a Christmas gift from my husband who also has a DELL laptop, the 8600 15" widescreen. A lot of time, energy, and care went into this order as you can imagine. He wanted to give me the best. There were some delays with the order, and for our trouble they upgraded the display from the XGA+ to this UXGA! So I guess DELL thought they were doing us a favor when they passed on to us this inferior display. Now I wonder if it's off of one of the returns! Anyway, I am trying to be sensitive to my hubby's feelings, so we ordered the flat panel monitor that arrived yesterday. Also ordered because I just can't stand viewing webpages and icons with such tiny fonts. I guess I will have to chalk this one up to experience and live with it, and yes, move on quickly or I will drive myself crazy with this whole thing. I guess what is bothering me is knowing that there is a better display, and there really isn't 100% surefire way to receive one if you do a reorder and rebuild. I am now past the 21 day mark, so not sure how things are handled. In retrospect, I think it is very difficult to order a computer as a gift. It's such a personal preference thing. Another thing I find extremely difficult is to order computers online without being able to see it as the example of DELL's way of doing things.

It would be very difficult to move into the initiation process for downgrading the monitor AFTER the 21 days. It might be possible with about 4 hours worth of going around in circles on the phone. However, if you find the display to be "hazy" or "sparkly" you can get a replacement part from tech support. This won't change the fact that it will still be WUXGA.

So far, we have not had much success with tech support replacing under warranty a different type of monitor as that's considered a 'system swap.' However, given Dell's inconsistent levels of support I wouldn't be terribly surprised if you could get someone in tech support to do it.

Either way, if you want to move with Dell the later you wait the worse off you are.

I have just called Dell customer care and requested to send a tech to my home next week. It is fixed. They will replace the part (Y7114 = W4554 by get-edid) by D8987 one. Can any one having D8987 and how it goes with ? In UK it seems that they doesnot have Y4014 part ???

please suggest.

Mine hasnt arrived yet and I knw we are all in different situations but if the screen/laptop is not 100% what I want I intend to call and call and keep calling until I get exactly what I expect to get for the amount of money I paid. It is a lot of money and really you should get nothing but quality for it and you know be happy with what you got, I mean real happy without reservations. Cant hurt to stick it to the buggers if the screen is not what you want.
Anyway nice gift wish someone gave me a laptop.

W5412 UWXGA LCD panel here. Will check the manufacturer/model later.

Slight sparkling on bright background, but not a problem to me. LCD is bright and clear to read. Better than my 15.4" UWXGA minus the sparkling 'special effect'.

Love it.

I checked my service tag and it appears I have the X4766 WGA+. This is my first laptop and I'm very happy with the screen and with Samsung monitors/LCDs in general.

Half Life 2 looks way cool hooking up my i9200 to my Samsung DLP 50" TV via DVI! I'll post some pics if I can...

Had a W4554 (LG) panel in the 1st one, got a Y4014 (Samsung) in the 2nd. I like the 2nd one overall, but it has much more light leakage on the bottom than the 1st one. Have others had the same experience? I'm waiting till the 19th to make a decision on sending back the second one, or asking for another screen.

Just got my 9200 this afternoon. Of course, after reading this thread ever since I placed the order with the UXGA screen, the first thing I did was check out the lcd panel.

Knoppix reported the monitor as the SEC5557 which is Dell part number Y4014 from what I gather.

I also tried the ASTRA utility off the Ultimate Boot Disk which gave more detailed information. It told me that the monitor vendor is "Seiko Epson" and reported the model number as SEC5557 as well with a mention of Y4014 somewhere else on the screen. I thought it was weird that the vendor was "Seiko Epson" since Dell and most others in this thread have been calling it the Samsung display...

Visually the monitor is very different from the UXGA panel on my 8500. Can't say I prefer one or the other yet. Everything else about the machine (so far) seems much better than the 8500.

OK, that makes sense that SEC = Seiko-Epson Corporation. But Dell has been listing the maker as Samsung, and people who have seen techs replace their panel also confirmed a Samsung label. So, both ASTRA and Knoppix are probably incorrectly guessing the maker based on their decoding of the EDID information.

Guys.....I just received a 29 day old 9200 on a trade. I trasfered ownership and everything and wouldn't you believe it have the ever hated Phillips LCD. I don't know if it was me but after 2-3hours of use I began getting a headache. I've contacted Dell claiming I have light leakage and Servere sparkle to see if they'll respond. You think I have a chance?

Yes as a warranty based issue if you get the right person. No worries. Possibly lotsa hassle though to be honest. Just need to keep trying to find someone intelligent.

I guess a serveice rep with a foreign name is not a good start huh......lol.

According to my parts list i have the Y4014, but this screen is really dim in my opinion, at anything below max brightness, the screen seems noticeably dim.

Also, due to the sparkling effect, web pages like google have the search box partially invisible so if you dont know where it is, it is very tough to figure out where on the page it is.

Do you guys think that I have a different screen or is the Y4014 really this bad (basing this off dellberts list of screens?
If so, then I'm probably gonna return this lappy and buy something else.

Viper, the invoices and web sites are not totally accurate....only the software is. There are numerous links and instructions throughout this thread about downloading the software.

thanks Heinrich, im beginning to believe that, when i get back from work i plan to check the lcd model/part number throught knoppix or the other program that dellbert posted.

if this does turn out to be one of the better lcds, i may just return it and buy another sager. i dont want to deal with some of the problems other people have had with getting their lcds replaced.
