Yeah, sometimes I get stoned, turn out the lights, set my wallpaper to solid green, and just sit back and say "whoa...." But it's kind of expensive for a quasi lava lamp.

W4554 - Sparkly; waiting for my replacement. Should be here tomorow. I hope I'm going to get a Samsung. I have Samsung on my old I8200 UXGA and it is great, but the white has a little yellow tent. I think I can live with the W4554 (very nice bright colors) but should be better then this. I replaced the machine for some other problems. Another strange thing: I never used maximum brightness on my I8200, but the W4554 is too dark if you set it even just one line under max.

Thanks Dellbert -

X4766 XGA+ Samsung here, no sparkly, no complaints. Looks great.

just noticed somthing ..
on my invoice i have W5412 listed. if i check my managed machines in my account at dell.com it shows W4554.

did i get somebodys old return or is dell trying to swindle me on re-hashed parts? i didnt see a red refurb sticker under the laptop either.

775, it would be great if you could clarify which panel you have. People seem to have some success booting a Knoppix CD to get LCD panel info. A Samsung panel would have a SEC prefix, and an LG Philips panel would have an LP prefix.

i got the x4766 Samsung WXGA. Looks great. Onnly complaint is that when its in black, u can some some uneveness of the light.

X4766 Samsung WXGA. Looks great. A little light leakage, and bottom right corner near clock is slightly darker. Otherwise it's perfect

Original
X4766 Samsung WXGA+, light leakage + dead pixels, did not like it

Replacement
T4976 Unknown brand, no dead pixels/leakage, looks better than X4766 IMO.

My 9200 UXGA screen was part # W5412. I went back and forth about the screen and finally decided that the sparkle defect was too distracting, so I returned it.

go5700, I wonder if you got the LG Philips WXGA+. I still haven't been able to nail down the part number for that one. You didn't happen to notice the panel maker when you tore down your machine, eh? I assume the machine you tore down was the one you returned to Dell (To anybody who doesn't know what I'm talking about, see the Photo Album section.)

you are right, that was the one I sent back ..just wanted to take some helpful pics before I sent the laptop back, you know, in case someone needs them.

and yea, I am not going to tear the new replacement apart because it is so perfect, I don't want to break it. Will do the Kanotix way tomorrow to see what brand is it.

Cool. Remind me not to go shopping for a refurb right after you do a return
post #33 of 329
according to the outlet faq, they are going to disassemble all the return PCs then rebuild and test them anyway. Plus, it is not like I am doing anything damaging the PC like scratching it or frying the video card with the wrong BIOS. What i did was just unscrewing the laptop, took some pics and put the laptop back together.

I've got the F7116 (UK) WUXGA. No major complaints.
A bit of a sparkle effect visible, though a bit annoying, I'm getting used to it. Its got very little light leakage, havn't noticed any dead pixels and I love having such a high resolution!

The X4976 is the LG Philips WXGA+ Panel which is the one I now have and as I've stated in the other forums (under 'KozZo'), it's MUCH better than the Samsung X4766 which is a bit too yellow, has light leakage and (in MHO) is just not as crisp versus the whiter, more even and more vivid Philips. I wonder how that other 'W' Samsung model# would compare?

Just to clarify again, the 'XXXX' should be model# 'T4976' and that is made by LG Philips. This is the one with the colder tones, and the one that I stated that had too much yellow (or warmer tones) would be model X4766 - NOT W5411 (I've never seen W5411 and am curious how they would compare, as I've stated above). Again, I am user KozZo at the i9200 forums.

This is all very interesting!

Thanks, Sowelu, your post clarified several things -- I've updated the original post.

I know what you mean by the warm/yellow tones on the Samsung. My 9100 with a Samsung WSXGA+ has the same sort of tone, and it's obvious when compared to the 9200 WUXGA. I have to say that I didn't notice the same tones in the Samsung W5411 WXGA+. It's just about perfect, and I'm pretty picky.

So, the only open issue at this point is whether a close-to-perfect WUXGA exists for the 9200. I'll be evaluating a W5412 next week, and one guy in Australia just loves his. I wonder if Dell reuses the same part number for different parts at different production facilities. Oh well, I'll know more next week.

What do you have your gamma, brightness, and contrast set as? I changed mine and now my screen looks crazy. I press the default button and its still not right.

Right click on desktop, properties, click settings tab, click advanced, then click color. Hopefully someone with the X4766 screen can check this for me.
I dont recommend ever pressing the default button, it has changed mine and it doesnt look good.

Maybe you or someone else with the X4766 could post their settings for gamma, brightness, and contrast for me? Right click on desktop, go to properties, click settings tab, click advanced, then click the ATI color tab.

I changed the settings and now my screen looks all crazy. I press the default button and it still doesnt look right. Thanks to anyone who can post these!!!

I can now vote on the T4976 panel. I just got my T4554 replaced with it.

Inu_Yasha is correct in that this screen does sparkle.

However, it's very liveable and you have to "think" about it to notice it. Considering all the discussion on sparkle here, people may notice it. i would say it is about 25% the intensity of the W4554. My eyes do not go cross-eyed. The sparkle is not nearly intense enough to produce the "holographic effect" that the W4554 shows.

However, the colors and whites are lovely with 0 dead pixels and very very low light leakage.

I have 21 days and will report back if I change my mind, but, a big thumbs up for T4976.
