I have in the past week requested and recieved TWO DIFFERENT WUXGA replacement screens for my 9200, and was told they would be the Samsung display as requested by me. Both replacements have been the LG Philips W4554. Funny thing is, the last rep that sent it to me swore up and down that Dell is currently sending out Samsung LCD's in the kit. On my last tech support call I was told that Samsung LCD's are out of stock. I'm not sure what's going on there, and the tech support reps don't either.

I got W4554 for the replacement kit, too.

Researched a lot about 9200 WUXGA panel and I need a little more information from you guys.

Anybody tell me who had or has both W4554 and Y4014, response time diffrence for high fps game or movie and the viewing angle?

W4554 is S-IPS type LCD...and Y4014 is PVA type LCD(maybe improved version).

Either has its own pros and cons. I will discuss it later.

Guys,

Now I am totally disappointed and also confused. Let me introduce myself. I live in London. Recently I bought one inspiron 9200 from Dell. Originally I got F7114 kit with W4554 kit (LPL0000) LG-Philips. It had frosty/sparkling effect. So I called up Dell and requested for a LCD replacement with D8987. Last week it has been replaced by D8987 -Y4014 kit (SEC5559) Samsung. Now I can surely tell you that LCD has very little sparkling effect. But my friend it has a major defect that can't be ignored. Color is not showing up properly. It got a lighter sheds to grey sheds almost every where on the LCD.

Statistics of D8987 – Y4014 ( SEC5557) Samsung kit:

Black is showing as a sheds of grey (dark).
Color has a washing away effect; this means that bright (dark) colors are getting their lighter sheds. This is totally disgusting. It is clearly distinguishable when I kept this system (9200) and my old inspiron 8500 side by side keeping the brightness level same (80%-100%). The difference is like anything. Movie is not showing up well.
When reducing the brightness, the display trends to get grey sheds from color shed. (@/;%^)
Light is leaking almost every where on LCD.

Statistics of F7114 – W4554 (LPL0000) LP Philips kit:

Frosting/sandy/sparkling effect
True Black. No sheds of grey was present.
Rich and vibrant color was present. Very good for movie/games.
Light leaking was almost nil

Now some one place advice what should I do next. I am not liking is D8987 (Y4014) at all.

I had the same reaction when I first saw the Y4014, but with a little color tweaking, it looks much better. Try dropping gamma correction, dropping brightness, and increasing contrast a bit. I'm not in front of the 9200 right now, but I'll try to post my color settings later.

Edit: I used EnTech PowerStrip to create a color profile with a linear gamma ramp, 0.75 gamma, -15% brightness, and -10% contrast. I was trying to match the coloration of my 700m, but now that I've revisited it, I actually like the Y4014's default settings better....

I was told that the WXGA+ was out of stock so they were going to upgrade me free to WUXGA - that's what STARTED the whole mess to begin with. It took a few more hours to get a replacement WXGA+ for the WXGA+ that I had (but needed to replace thanks to a nasty buzz.)

why don't you take these settings directly in the options of ati's driver (display options)?

OK, my new i9200 arrived 2 days ago,
I'm lucky: my display is SEC5557 / Y4014 (checked trought Knoppix) (in dell shipping list F7116)
I opened the display, run win Xp and immediately I opened a new blocknotes... I was not completly satisfied: it's sparkles a bit on a white surface.... oh no.... I use the laptop on XL for 95% the time ... so I always look at white spreadsheet... my poor eyes...
I read a lot this forum (and others...) and I started trying changing settings.
I've obtained my best result usyng QuickGamma http://quickgamma.de/infoen.html using tese settings:
In display settings:
Gamma. 1.0
BRIGHTNESS: -25
CONTRAST: 200 (maximum value: yuo need to set this one for setting QuickGamma program)

QuickGamma Settings:
Gamma red: 2.05
Gamma green: 1.95
Gamma blu: 1.85

No I'm really mutch satisfied!!!

For setting parametres I've used to compare same internet pages/photos on Latitude C800 (15'' 1400x1050) and Latitude D600 (14'' 1400x1050). At the end the colors are very similar even the white that in the i9200 is mutch brillant (and sparkling) than on the others 2 where white has like a little bit of yellow...

... I've seen Sony vaio in a computer shop... really amazing the quality... it seems looking a real paper sheet, but it is mutch more expansive!!!

Here in Italy my i9200 2.0ghz (there is not yet te 2.1), 60Gb 7200rpm, 1gb ram (2x512), Wuxga: €2.000+vat 20% = €2400
A sony vaio 1,7mhz, 60gb (not the 7200 rpm), 512 am (2x256), WUXGA: €2500

Because my color tab disappeared after I updated ATI's drivers.

To properly update drivers:

Download driver cleaner from www.driverheaven.net

Uninstall Ati Drivers/Control Panel and/or Catalyst Control Center from control panel as a normal program. Unplug network cable and/or temporarily disable wifi so that Windows can't connect to the internet. Boot into safe mode w/o networking. Run Driver cleaner. Boot into regular windows. This is when Windows will start asking for "I found a new device" hit cancel, cancel, cancel, shut the F up I'm not a 45 year old housewife box, until it finally shuts up. Then install the drivers.

the same little (but really little) problems

i9200 screen

The same with me - I have the WXGA+ screen: very clear and sharp images, but lots of light leakage on a dark screen at the bottom - very noticeable when playing a DVD. But I didn't get this laptop for DVD-playing (the main thing for me is word processing and surfing the internet). On the whole, very happy with the screen. Can't figure out if I've got the Philips or Samsung screen, how can I tell?

Use the tools at the bottom of the first post to id the screen.

I'm glad to hear of another Dutch i9200 owner. I have the WUXGA screen and I'm still trying to get it replaced as I have a sparkling w4554. Thus far I'm not impressed by the Dell service.

9200 Service

Agree - service here in Holland is not very good. I can give you one bit of advice though, after buying 3 computers from Dell: try NEVER to pay in advance!! I did the first time, and I had to wait 2.5 months. Never again! Then a friend told me that if you were listed as an 'enterprise' (onderneming) and had a Chamber of Commerce (KvK) number Dell would let you pay after delivery, within 30 days. I had to insist on this though - esp. the last time, when buying this laptop, they made a fuss; for some reason they'd shifted me to the 'home customers' department and they said in that case I had to either pay in advance or give them a credit card number. I resolutely refused. Then they tried to get me to pay 50-50 (50 percent in advance, 50 percent afterwards) - again I refused and said it was an 'absolute condition' for me to pay after delivery and if it was a problem, I would take my business elsewhere. They called back within 5 minutes and said it was OK. I got my laptop, fully according to specifications, 1 week later. (Still didn't get the bill, though ). When I got the laptop I was afraid that they might have 'upgraded' me to the WUXGA screen, which has all the problems. I tried to find out before having to switch it on whether I'd gotten the right screen from somebody from customer care, and he didn't seem to know what I was talking about... In the end I had to switch on the laptop to test it, and it was fine. Very nice screen, restful on the eyes (just lots of light leakage at the bottom, as I noticed when playing a DVD. No big deal for me, though). Somebody was supposed to come and install it (I paid extra for this option) but I've had the laptop for almost a week now and so far nobody's been in touch. So as I said: I agree with you, customer care is far from perfect.

Interesting advice. The question is, what would happen if you just update the driver on top without uninstalling first. Or just simply uninstall and do an update without doing the driver cleaner ?? Thanks.

Hokay
iv been running all the utils from the Ultimate Boot CD to try and identify the monitor
but on all attempts, it returns manufacturer as unknown. Guess im out of luck. Not that it matters, its a great screen.
Try Knoppix. The monitor should either be LPL0000(LG Philips Limited) or SEC5557(Samsung Electric Corporation).

Go to the first category (I forget if it's called Motherboard Utilities or System Utilities).

Hit the space bar to go to the second page.

Select ASTRA.

Choose Monitor Information. It'll give you more detailed information than any other utility, including Knoppix. When DOS is loading, I skip the USB scan to speed things up.

I made the mistake of taking a i9200 with a Y4014 to a store yesterday and put it side-by-side with the glossy screens. I knew they would likely look better, but not that much better. As expected, the Sony screen looked much better, although not perfect. It has color temp changes across the screen- left side warm, right side cool. It also has a black level shift between the top and the bottom (it's even worse on the the Y4014), which desktop LCDs seemed to have taken care of years ago. However, it was nice to see a solid green screen with no sparkle at all. In comparison, the Y4014 just looked dull.

I also to took it to a Dell kiosk to compare it to the WXGA+, and the latter was noticeably brighter.

While the Y4014 doesn't look too bad by itself, Dell had better upgrade the screens on the i9300 (which has been rumored) or they will be left behind. It's too bad, because I still like the rest of the machine more than the others I saw. I keep wondering if it's possible to put one of these bright glossy screens in the i9200.

Doh! I've learned that I am perfectly happy with the Y4014 as long as I don't compare it side-by-side with my wife's W5411, my 700m, or any Sony!
