Which 9200 panel do you have? - Page 4

Mine is Y4014 WUXGA Samsung SEC5557. It has very little sparkles. I love it. It looks great on linux (SUSE 9.2) since you can adjust the font as you desire.

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My replacement came today and I am SOOO happy! I used to have the W4554 and it was replaced with the Y4014. The sparkle is 100x better and the brightness is so much better too. I have some side by side pics if someone can host 'em, let me know!

Well worth the time to get a new one sent out!

Offering to buy lunch for someone from the San Francisco Bay area to meet me at the Stanford Shopping Center in Palo Alto to show me their Dell Inspiron 9200 WUXGA side by side with a Sony Vaio A290 at the Sony Style Store. Send email if interested.

Can you please post the pics on i9200 forums of your new screen? Thanks

ok crew, I'm really confused now.

From end of November until as recently as last week, I'd go fill in my service tag in the Home Customer Support section/original Configuration and I would get W4554 panel, no list of manufacturer.

However, Dell revamped the original configuration list to include more information, and changed the LCD entry to:

Y4014LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY, Wide Ultra Extended Graphics Array, STANDARD PANELS WORKING GROUP, 17, SAMSUNG

W5412MODULE, LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY, 17WU, SAMSUNG, SGB

(Dellbert, you can understand I'm kind of too lazy to download 700megs for the knoppix)
If I do in fact have the Y4014, that would explain why I've been so happy with the screen and not understand the extent of the complaints.

I also find it weird that they would now list Y4014. I had my i9200 shipped end of November like most of you guys.

I'll keep investigating.

edit: Can't I just run Astra win32 for Win XP? From the Ultimate Boot CD website, I can link to Astra and Astra windows versions. I'll give it a try.

edit part 2: Exercise in futility: Astra tells me -> Generic Display, Generic model. Great.

Hey, Demo514, it would be interesting to find out what this little utility tells you about your display:

get-edid

Run it from a Command Prompt:

C> get-edid foo.dat
C> parse-edid foo.dat

The parse doesn't work for the LG display, but it'd be nice to know whether it works for the Samsung.

And I'm not surprised that Dell screws up the service tag information. They seem to screw up a lot of things.
I ran the above program and I got the following text in the foo.dat file:

ÿÿÿÿÿÿ 2 €%x
ž˜WSŒ*&PT H?€ðp°2@0 oæ þ W4554171WU1
þ È´¨ |X=
½

There is the W4554 in there, which was listed on my invoice and packing slip.

The data is binary, so it won't be very pretty if you try to dump it raw, but there is an ascii string in there, and I would tend to believe ROM data more than my packing slip. I got one machine for which the packing slip indicated a Samsung W5412, but the display looked like crap, and the EDID structure indicated a W4554.
Same. I still have the W4554 as listed by get-edid.
Suspicious how Dell all of a sudden decides to change the list of components in my laptop. Perhaps trying to avoid the possibility of me returning it by telling my I have the newest LCD perhaps.. who knows. Or a legitimate fark up.
But then, why go from correct to incorrect. makes no sense.

Conspiracy theory time. We already know Dell reads these threads, so they're trying to make a preemptive strike against 9200 returns by altering the service tag information! Sneaky bastards

I have the Samsung X4766 and it's making me dizzy. It looks like a CRT monitor when the refresh rate is set too low. It's almost like I can see pictures, words, moving around on the screen. I have no idea what could have happened to it. Anyone else seen this??
Our Dell 9200 with the Samsung x4766 is as stable as a rock.
The screen is very bright and very clear.

Got my 9200 on Monday with the T4976 LG/Philips WXGA+ display. Absolutely love this display. It has no sparkles that I can tell with very good color tones with bright whites. I'm happy with this display.

Just unpacked and booted up my 9200 (it is BEAUTIFUL!!) and I have zero sparkle, I'm glad I opted to get the WUXGA, I'm accustomed to 1600x1200 so this just feels great. Anyway my display when I check on the Dell website is a Y4014. Truly wonderful.

100% happy with my i9200 WUXGA now!!!

I have posted many times in several posts about my dislike for the WUXGA screen on my i9200. I have had a total of 3 i9200’s with 2 replacements; “ALL” have been the model 5412 LCD the first two where just awful with the third screen simply the best screen I have seen on a laptop. I have all ways liked the rest of the computer with the LCD being my only dislike. The last LCD is clear, crisp and bright white with “NO” sparkles, you can actually see the individual pixels. When you see a bad screen next to an i9100 WUXGA or a good 9200 with a WUXGA you can see just how bad a bad i9200 LCD is. I’m 100% happy with my Dell Now. LeeU

Congrats, LeeU. Any chance you can tell us for certain the model numbers of the good and bad panels?

If all else fails, try this:

I just ordered a replacement screen for mine. Part #D8987 Does anydovy know if this is a good one?

Hi all!

I received my i9200 with a WUXGA panel this monday and have mixed feelings about the screen...
I love the screensize but.....
On white/light backgrounds there are definite sparkles. Darker color schemes, like the one here at notebookforum, are sharp and do not seem to show the sparkle. Is this how everyone experiences the sparkle effect?

The letter accompanying my laptop states its the F7116.
However get-ided says: W4554171WU1
I'm in Holland so that's where it's been ordered.

I have already installed my own software on the machine, if I were to send it back do they replace the panel on this machine or do they send a new one altogether?
