From end of November until as recently as last week, I'd go fill in my service tag in the Home Customer Support section/original Configuration and I would get W4554 panel, no list of manufacturer.

However, Dell revamped the original configuration list to include more information, and changed the LCD entry to:

Y4014LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY, Wide Ultra Extended Graphics Array, STANDARD PANELS WORKING GROUP, 17, SAMSUNG

W5412MODULE, LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY, 17WU, SAMSUNG, SGB

(Dellbert, you can understand I'm kind of too lazy to download 700megs for the knoppix)
If I do in fact have the Y4014, that would explain why I've been so happy with the screen and not understand the extent of the complaints.

I also find it weird that they would now list Y4014. I had my i9200 shipped end of November like most of you guys.

I'll keep investigating.

edit: Can't I just run Astra win32 for Win XP? From the Ultimate Boot CD website, I can link to Astra and Astra windows versions. I'll give it a try.

edit part 2: Exercise in futility: Astra tells me -> Generic Display, Generic model. Great.
Hey! Dell's system Information tells me the same thing when I enter my service tag:

1Y4014LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY, Wide Ultra Extended Graphics Array, STANDARD PANELS WORKING GROUP, 17, SAMSUNG
1W5412MODULE, LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY, 17WU, SAMSUNG, SGB

I ordered my system in the beginning of November and received it a month later. I checked out the service tag right when I got the system and it has always listed my system as having a Y4014.Then I ran get-edid and got W4554♣171WU1.

My screen does have some sparkle in it, but after awhile I make nothing of it.

Demo514 have you trired contacting dell about the discrepancies?

Mine is in route. Ordered it the 31st of Dec. Not a bad wait. I CAN't wait though, haha. I will let you all know what my screen is and how it looks.

Not really, I'm happy with my screen/the sparkles don't really bother me so I didn't see a need to.

PM Sent!

Yeah, the new screen is gorgeous, it take everything I love about the 4554 (sharpness, clarity, resolution) and makes it what it should be (brightness, glare, less sparkle)

I will admit, that this display (9200 WUXGA) is a different look then the glossy Sony & Toshibas. But I honestly like it way better now that the sparkle is down to a tolerable level. To me its a more realistic image and is just incredible.

FINALLY!! My 9200 is on a truck here in DE and on its way. I'm waiting to get it before I go to work! I really hope my screen is fine!

I cant get over how different the two screens from diff manufacturers looked. nite and day almost

My replacement will be here on Monday - it shipped 1 day late so now I have to wait all weekend. But, I checked the svc tag # and it will be a Y4014! The original was a very sparkley W4554.

I went back and looked more at the glossy screens, and I have to say that all the lights in the store reflecting off the screen really started to bother me. In a dark room they would be beautiful, but under normal lighting I think (hope) this screen might be better. I plan on taking it to compare them directly.

With such a difference in brightness, it looks like it might be close to the Sony & Toshiba models. After reading the horror stories for support in the forum on those two, I think Dell is the far lesser evil. The HP 7830 glossy screen was much dimmer than the other glossy screens.

It may be just exposure, but the 2nd pic showing the Samsung display on the right looks blown out on the highlights. Is it set for default color settings?

Just get mine replace as well.

Dell online service call status show a P/N D8987. However, when the tech show me the packing slip from the box it show two different p/n D8987 and Y4014. After the tech finish I run knoppix and it shows SEC5557. So I think D8987 & Y4014 is the same.

On a seperate note, I don't know if any of you has a tech come in to replace the screen. If you do, what do you think? My tech is poorly equiped, careless and so nervous. He make me so nervous when he stick a huge screw driver the size of the one someone use to and try to pry out the screw cover on the bottom of the screen. I have to told him to hold on so I can find a tiny screw driver (the one use for eyeglasses). He still manage to scractch the bezel whilre removing the screw cover anyway. After the bezel is removed, he manage to strip one of the LCD mounting screw, the one attach to the GND chassis on the bottom of the screen with his big Philips screw driver. I have to use small wire cutter plier, grab the screw on the side and unscrew it. Once he finish mounting the LCD, he replace the stripped screw with the one on the side. Now I have one missing screw on the side. By the time he finish to put everything back together, he realize that he can't snap the hinge cover on (the one locate above the kboard), he forget to pass the right hand side wire back the way it has to be. So he has to remove all the bezel screw one more time and put the wire back in place. When he left, I have to clean up my screen which has his fingerprint all around the LCD. Well, I think this is a small price to pay to get a better screen and no sparkling.

If it were you will you tip him? I feel so sorry for him and so happy with my new screen that I leave him a tip anyway.

For those would be interested, ASTRA32 doesn't give any LCD information. I have to use Knoppix instead.

Thank you all for your valuable information and input. Without them I wouldn't be able to verify what Dell was given me in replace.

Tip him? I would have tipped him over and booted him out. Dell designs these laptops so that any idiot can work on them, so sure enough they seem to send idiots to do the work. Next time, just ask for the part, read the service manual, and do it yourself.

Have to agree with you on that one. If you feel comfortable working on electronics, I would recommend you do the work yourself. I just tell Dell that there is someone who is a Dell certified Tech where I work and they ship warranty replacement parts to me directly. BTW: There is someone here who is a Dell certified tech, but I just choose to perform the work myself.

That's why I always demand the parts to be sent to me, if i scratch my laptop, I can blame myself . Anyway I do not have at home service and do not like to send my laptop back.

By the way, I got the replacement screen today, so far it is a lot better, the sparkle is reduced to minimal with D8987. Eventhough I get used to the sparkle screen but this one displays the real white color

UPDATE: Now that I see my packing slip, it shows that D8987 is indeed Y4014.

D8987 SVC;LCD;WUXGA;SPWG;17;STB
ABOVE PART D8987 includes
F5399 ASSY,CBL,COAX,LCD,17,SGB
Y4014 LCD,WUXGA,SPWG,17,SMSNG

It seems lately just about everyone is getting the Y4014. I wonder what happens to all those replaced sparkle screens.
