There is no fan chirp problem with either of the two systems I had... You should probably call Sager on it..if there is a problem with your fans no point in risking early burn out because you didn't want to send it back..

I'm hearing a clicking sound with one of my fans too. It seems
to come from the fan beside the DVD/CD Drives. The sound is very slight
and occurs every 2 seconds or so. The Laptop seems quite hot, but then
again I don't know how hot/cold it should be. When should the fan be on
or off? Sometimes I hear a 'whirr' and it seems the fan starts. Sounds quite
loud. The fan will spin for a while and then stop. Is this normal? What should
be the normal operating mode?

Normal (anything other than playing games or running graphic intense apps) for my machine is around 50 -56c

Running games, it shoot up to 60c-65c

what are the temperatures your hard drives are running at? my 7200rpm drive in my 9860 runs between 30-40C, is this normal?

Yes. Mine is in that range too

I think the problem doesn't occur until a few weeks of use or so. I've had mine only for a month, and I didn't notice this problem until a few days ago.

Plus, why would sager release a fix if it wasn't a common issue?

-Where should your system temp be? Read the first msg in this thread.
-How do I know if I am affected? Read the first msg in this thread.
-What temp should my hard disk be at? That depends on the make/model but 30c-55c is acceptable from my experience.

Sager Received my system as of 9:56am Tuesday morning, but I haven't heard anything from them. Considering I sent it with explicit printed details along with address/serial/etc... I would expect no problems with the return.
However if they don't contact me by next week I may just drive on over and have a little chat, seeing how local they are to me.

I went through a similar issue with (2) of my Toshiba's and it was resolved with a BIOS flash. Simply increasing the time before throttling down after each power up at max throttle.

For those with the issue (read 1st msg for test/charts/link to intel) an external cooler is not the answer. If your new car's radiator fan just wiggled allowing you to drive around just slightly under boiling, would you go buy an inverter to plug in a house fan you bought at wal-mart and strap it to the front? No you wouldn't I hope, as most vehicles are engineered with proper cooling in mind when all components are functioning properly. So get the malfunction fixed.

Hi,

I seem to be one of the first people that noticed this problem. I applied the latest "fan fix" bios that is available from a link futher up this thread and now the fan runs all the time. It's not too bad - keeps the system MUCH cooler (around 44 C right now.)

What you describe is exactly the problem my system had. I don't consider it to be NORMAL. For one thing the clicking sound is extremely annoying. The fan running all the time is better in my opinion, because it begins to blend in as white noise (my ears tune it out). When the clicking started it would constantly catch my attention and would be hard to tune out. Also, the system was generally idling at 58-60 C. Just the idea that the fan was trying to start and couldn't didn't seem right to me. I don't think it's a strictly mechanical problem, or this many people wouldn't be having it....

Anyway, my question to the Sager folks is if this "always on" fan fix is the FINAL fix, or if a true final fix - that keeps the fans from running all the time, but doesn't let the "chirping/clicking" start - is on the way. Anyone know?

Thanks,
- Kbrown

Well I've been in the Rocky Mountains for the last week but I am glad to see that there is a solution being worked on. What was the keyboard flash from Luke that someone mentioned on page 4?

Hellooooooo...Is this "fix" supposed to the "final fix"? Are they working on a proper one?

Yes I tried it.... It works, but the fans run all the time at about medium to medium high speed. Its a bit noisy, but if you're having cooling issues then this is a good temp fix. I however, am not, and the noise was a bit much. So I went back to the old solution. When I did this I did notice something; it still seems to be running cooler...? I don't quite understand, but I like it...

My HDD (the 7200 rpm 60gb one) is now reaching 45-50 C after being used for a good number of hours during the day. Is it okay for a hard drive to be at 47 or 48 C? or is something wrong? The rest of the system is operating/idling at 45-50 C. I just don't know if hard drives are supposed to run this hot??

Was it more quiet than the first fix or is it just the same very high noise level ? Fans work nearly all the time with original firmware, but on a low level, what is absolutely enough, while with the first fan-fix worked full speed all the time, which is unnecessary and killing any good mood.

So my solution up to now is making the cpu hot from the beginning once about half an hour, so temp never reaches lower than 47C and fans keep running in an acceptable speed. When I start my 9860, the wiggling fan always starts correctly, wiggling comes with some of the first 5 re-starts.

That seems a bit hot. Mine never went beyond 40C.

Edit: my system is Hypersonic EX7, and I have the same 60G 7200rpm drive

Is there a solution for the fan chirping and temp problem yet other than the flash that runs the fans all the time? How many are running that flash by the way?

No ! - Me NOT.

I'm running the fix provided by Luke on page 2. Both fans are running, I'm not sure what speed. (Is there low, med, high or just low, high?) They are audible, but barely so. I'd say it really just comes down to personal preference and your environment. I have a desktop computer with 4 fans down below me, and the 9860 certainly doesn't come anywhere close to that. Additionally, 90% of the time I am playing music with the 9860, so for me, it is still essentially inaudible. With all of that, and my tv as well, turned off, it is of course audible in a quiet room, but still easily within reason if you ask me. I never checked my temps before the fan fix, but now idling, with mIRC, Gaim, Thunderbird, Firefox, Winamp, and Azureus running, my temp is 40C. After playing Counter-Strike (admittedly not as stressful as HL2 must be) my temp is 47. Whether or not the current firmware is the absolute final fix, I personally am quite happy with the state of things right now.
