Well, Christmas miracles happen. On Tuesday I filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau with great reluctance after having been told no known ship date for my CD drive, no further assistance possible from Gateway...they just "don't have them" and "wont replace the whole notebook for one bad component".

On Thursday, Christmas Eve, lo and behold, Fed Ex delivers a rushed overnight delivery from Gateway. And my brand new CD drive has made my Christmas.

I wanted to thank you guys in particular for your responses and your compassion for my situation.

Happy Holidays!

Well, isn't that what forums are for?

I wonder how you convinced them to give you a cd rom drive, don't you have to open it up to release the drive? Also do you think the BBB forced them to or was it just perfect timing?

no there's just two screws that hold the drive in place.

It was either really wonderful coincidental timing or the BBB really is on the ball. I have to ship back the old one within 10 days or they will charge my credit card $75.00 (they've had a hold on it since I called on the 2nd when it died).

It was only two screws, very easy to replace, just open the drive itself and tug lightly.

Working great now and it feels like the brand new awesome machine I paid for. I just wish I hadn't had to go through hoops to get it.
