3-way! 8600 wsxga+ vs 9200 wxga+ vs 9200 wuxga

My wife's 9200 WXGA+ arrived today. She likes it much better than the 8600 it's replacing.

On the left is the 8600 with Samsung WSXGA+.
In the center in the 9200 with Samsung WXGA+.
On the right is my 9200 with LG Philips WUXGA.

The 9200 WXGA+ appears to be one click brighter than the other two, has no noticeable anti-glare coating artifacts, and has nice coloration (I tried to tweak gamma correction to get the displays pretty close). Too bad it has the lowest rez of the three, but that's what wifey wanted....

BTW, I think the WUXGA grainyness is visibile in this shot. I'll post an individual shot of the WUXGA in another thread.

These pictures should also make the resolution differences obvious. The WUXGA can display 78% more information than the WXGA+, and 31% more than the WSXGA+.

What model Samsung does the 9200 XGA+ have?

The 9200 WXGA+ is a W5411 (I don't know the Samsung model number). I haven't compared it to another WXGA+, but it's noticeably clearer, brighter, and richer that the WSXGA+ and WUXGA I compared it to.

the wuxga on the 9200 looks tight in the pic.

I wish I had gotten the W5411. My X4766 has a little light leakage, but I usually dont notice it. I dont see why there are different Samsung panels.

Hey thanks for the pictures. However, I was wondering if you could just put two documents side by side (an Internet Explorer website and a Microsoft Word document) on the two 9200 screens so I can see the difference. Right now, I can see the big difference in resolutions but I was just wondering how workable it is with 2 documents side by side on the XGA+. Thanks for taking your time!

Sorry, I'm way too lazy to take any more pictures, but I did shoot one that same day that might help a little bit. Here's a comparison of two browser windows: WXGA+ vs WUXGA.

Nice pics. I like the higher resolution of the WUXGA. That WXGA is so bright Does the WXGA have the slightly darker area by the clock? Maybe im the only one that notices this but it drives me crazy sometimes
post #9 of 13
No, you're not the only crazy one! My 9200 WUXGA (part #4554) has the same dark area near the clock. I've noticed if you move your head and look at the clock with your eyes centered at a point in space above the clock (as opposed to your normal head position at the middle of the screen, as if you were using the laptop in the normal fashion) the dark area goes away. I think it might be a backlight design flaw or something. I do have some light leakage on the bottom of the display also, might have something to do with it.
I'm going to call Dell and ask some questions.

Thanks for posting, glad to know im not the only one. Like you, If I move my head right in front of it, it goes away. Let me know what Dell says about this. If I am doing normal work, I hardly ever see it but I would like to know that it wont start growing bigger or anything.

No, I have to say that my wife's WXGA+ is pretty close to perfect. Bright, evenly lighted, nice square corners, no leakage, no dead pixels, no anti-glare shimmer. If the resolution were higher, I'd take it away from her

Hmm I have to say that wuxga looks pretty poor. Brightness seems very lacking and I can see the sparkling effect similar to mine.

I am surprised people praise the wuxga when pics like this comparing the 3 laptops make the UXGA look like an anaemic LCD about to die. Sure there is more screenspace but at the big expense of reduced brightness and added sparkle.

It seems you got the same panel as me dellbert! Mine has a very slight light leakage, but has a trinitron like line near the bottom of the screen. Mine also has the dark area on the bottom right of the screen. Is it noticible? no! You'd have to know what to look at. The line bothers me from time to time but I can live iwth it. I'm getting a replacement panel sent to me so hopefully that will fix things for me.
