Any guesses on what's coming???

OK, so Intel releases Sonoma on 17 Jan 05, so any ideas on what kinds of improvements/enhancements we might see in the Dell line up?

I'm guessing the D600 will be converted to a widescreen format and not gain any weight... okay, maybe .5 lbs. I also think they will upgrade the gpu to dedicated RAM.

Anyone know who is the ODM for the Lattitude D800 and D600?

the d600 already has a dedicated m9 with 32mb ram

I guess I was thinking the ATI 9000 is not very current and they would be upgrading it to either the 9600 or 9700 with at least 64 MB. Sorry for the oversight.

I am glad your question was answered if sonoma is offered again they will have got the bugs out of the original sonoma launched a few months ago, now if windows can 'ever' get all the kinks out to the buggy Service Pack 2. Seems the companies are in a rush to get products out whether all the kinks ave been ironed out or not.

I wasn't aware there was a sonoma launched a few months ago??? And I'm not sure I understand what an Intel chip has to do with a Microsoft Windows operating system bug. To my knowledge, there will be no NEW Windows OS to accompany Sonoma.

There's a possibility of an XPS upgrade, and I already know of a D810, but I don't have any specs on it. I'm planning on grabbing a sonoma notebook ASAP, preferably from Dell.

I'm like you, I'd like to pickup a Sonoma as soon as they are available... word is that Dell will have them ready to go as soon as Intel makes the release official around the 17th of January. I'm hoping it's something smaller than the XPS... maybe a D610 with a widescreen, improved trackpoint, better gpu, and better hard drive options... say 100gig.

Cool, I guess I will wait even longer..*sigh* I'd like to see dell have a tv tuner/capture card in their next laptop. But I doubt that will happen

If that's the only changes, I'm really disappointed. I thought Dell would take the opportunity to make the D600 more of a T42 competitor than it currently is. If that's all they do, they will still rank well below the T42. Not even in the same ballpark in my opinion.

I edited my post with more details after he responded to the original message.

This may be a stupid question. But... Will those of us using the PM Bania's or Dothan's be able to scoop up a Sonoma chip and slap it into our lappy, or is the hardware incompatible?
Sonoma is actually a different motherboard and CPU combination, so I wouldn't count on it. Check out http://notebookforums.com/showthread...418#post594418
That has info on the new Dell latitude line with all the sonoma stuff.

With no improvements to the keyboard or trackpoint, they won't get my money. Having used a Thinkpad, Dell's is just to non-ergonomic friendly. When you program on a laptop all day long (and sometimes nights too), why would you settle for a 2nd class keyboard.

I don't understand why people continue to complain that the dell 600 series isnt as good at the ibm thinkpads. The thinkpads are built better, that's just a fact. However, you aren't making a fair comparison. Let's take a $1000 laptop and a $1500 laptop (with the exact same specs)..wow, what a surprise, the $1500 laptop is built better. With that extra $500, though, you can get a computer with a whole lot better specs.
If you want the build quality of the ibm, be prepared to spend a lot more for a lot less computer.

I don't know why people automatically think that Thinkpads are more expensive than Dells. Especially when you factor in the same features and components. I personally think that you can buy a Thinkpad for the same amount as a Dell Lattitude if you equip the Lattitude with the same components and features. Which is pretty hard to do because you can't get a decent, no top notch, key board and trackpoint on a Dell. The trackpad is Alps for goodness sake... not even synaptic... the market leader.

Thinkpads ooze quality. This can't be said for Dells. Sorry.

I did not "automatically assume" the thinkpad was more expensive. I went to the dell site and the ibm site and configured two computers with the exact same specs. I believe the dell was 1250 and the ibm was 1700. This is what i referenced in my post.

Really, ibms are higher quality? Good call, since that's pretty much exactly what i said. I merely said that you pay for it.

I agree. Overall Thinkpads cost more than Dells. Thinkpads are built with better quality. But Dell laptops offer greater flexibility in options.
