8790 Artifacting - Page 5

wierd...
ive noticed two types of artifacting with my 8790...
i'm running 3.2 prescott
sager drivers, updated bios, no OC
1gig
lapcool2 cooling pad underneath

i think it has something to do with the Direct X...
when i run a game such as battlefield 1942, it would take like maybe 30 min before the gpu would heat up to the point where it articfacts, then i would quit the game and still get artifacts all over my desktop, internet, what have you..

HOWEVER, when i run a game like jedi knight II, or starwars republic commando, i would get artifacts after a certian amount of time. BUT, when i quit the game, i would not get any other artifacts in windows...

i think it has something to do with D3D, cause i know microsoft/windows runs alot of D3D and therefore would cause the artifacts to stay on windows after, Open GL, on the other hand, isnt implemented in windows as much (if at all) and so does not lead to the browser/desktop artifacts...

i dunno, correct me if i'm wrong. just some ideas for PC TORQUE and/or SAGER to look into.

when it all comes down to it, it dosent artifact till the gpu gets hot (around the 123qwe area).
maybe D3D causes the gpu to heat up much much faster?

and i agree with jetino, keep pressing them to fix this problem. i paid like 2.5k for this great machine, and i dont want to waste anymore...

hi mattszeto. I had the same issue the only diffrence was thta when i ran 3d mark no artifacts.

what do others think?

I've experienced problems with the following games:

KOTOR
Sacred
Age of Wonders
C&C: Generals
new Star Wars LEGO demo (just DL'd the other day- funny stuff!)

Civilization III: Conquests plays fine, but the video's screwed up (codec issue, maybe)

Think that's all I've got for now. There are probably more, but I'm just coming up w/ what's on the top of my head at the moment. Might be more listed in my review. I don't know which ones of those run DirectX and which don't.

Edit:Guild Wars (thanks Mephista! )

I've also seen artifacts with HL2, Guild Wars, and UT2004

as soon as you realize that your machine is completely broken and is not supposed to work like that, you'll be a step closer to the RMA. I tried everything before sending it to sager, but it was useless. Good thing the new replaced mother board works pefectly, with no artifacts no matter what or how long I play

Some good news guys--- I was experiencing the artifacting even while just using the screen saver or desktop, and I used RadLinker to throttle down to 337/230 (just based on the stock increments, I didn' test it any higher) and it's been just like new ever since....ZERO artifacts whatsoever. We will see how things go from here, but I think this works so far, it has for five days or so.

what happens in my opinion is that the laptop is damaged on the hardware level, because after months of stressing the GPU, it simply burns itself. The only way to change GPU is by changing mother board. Some people send their laptops for RMAs and don't specify well enough what's happening, and get repairs they don't really need. As long as you have your mother board replaced, you should be able to solve your problems.

taking sagerguy24's advice i throttle down to 337/230 like him... and artifact went away immediately w/o shutting down the laptop or restarting... interesting... any inputs?

Tried that just now. And it worked for... about 2 seconds. Everything cleared up and then Bam, back to "normal."

Edit: I just tried setting it to almost as low as ATiTool'd go and it helps for all of 2 seconds and just like the sagerguy24's settings, goes right back to artifacting.

It hurts so much I have to laugh. If you really want to know, find the Live from Japan review thread.

Add Me To The List

I purchased my 8790 back when they first came out. The past week I have been experiencing some pretty bad artifacts. This is bullshit. Did I spend 2500 on a machine that is destined for a slow death?

I had the same problem...fans and heatsinks were clogged...Took everything apart - cleaned it out - applied fresh arctic silver and re-assembled it.

What a HUGE performance boost!!

A voice from the past speaks - LISTEN.....

hrm

Ok, I just took the thing as far apart as I could without risking anything. I cleaned out the dust with some compressed air and I also applied some heatsink compound to the GPU and CPU. I will update everyone. Thanks for the tips.
