Live CD Distro question

Thread Starter
i am looking for a live cd distro that i can also use to be put into one of my computers hardrives. right now i would use the live cd on my lappy AW with a mobility 9600. and i know that 9600 mobility is hard to detect or be supported on linux. so what do you reccomend.

also i want it to be graphical of corse and have some program support. i would like gimp on it. an office program and also support for a wireless card. a pci d-link if one exists and a pcmcia d-link for my lappy. basicly im doing (some) testing on my laptop for now untill my new puppy gets used to wires then i can connect my computer. so im turning my desktop into linux. right now im downloading knoppix. i tried suse and i dont think it worked. but i never tried the new version if there is one.
i also want c++ or basic programing and compiling stuff. so that one magical day when i learn to program i will be able to.

EDIT: ok i learned that ati is not nice with linux. so should i just get my old geforce 3 ti 200 on my desktop up and working?

The first one I always recommend is Knoppix (http://www.knoppix.net/). If you want 3D support for your ATI card, games-knoppix is available and was recently updated. You can get games-knoppix at:
- http://torrent.unix-ag.uni-kl.de/ -- torrent files. The home page seems to be down.

Others, like Gnoppix are available. Check out http://distrowatch.com/dwres.php?resource=major. On the right side, the top 5 LiveCD distros are: Knoppix, MEPIS Linux, PCLinuxOS, SLAX, Damn Small Linux.

overclockix: http://overclockix.octeams.com/

its updated frequently. they have support forums and a lot of hard to find drivers have been integrated into it already. I.E. Nforce2 chipset's NIC & video drivers some ATI drivers not sure about the ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 though but it is worth checking.

the guy who updates this distro wrote it for folding and system recovery but it works better than some knoppix like distros for me because it has a lot of odd drivers already built into the distro..

well my desktop has amd 64 in it. so is there a live cd and hd install linux that supports that. if it is supported by programs of corse. my desktop will have a geforce 3 ti 200 and a amd 64 3200+ but will be on a wired connection for now. soon ill get wireless card one of these days.

what do i download for that kaotix on the page. the bug hunter thing?

Knoppix 64 -- http://www.applia.fr/contents/knoppix64.html, kind of uses an old kernel (2.4.x)

Unfortunately, Gentoo's LiveCD seems to be good for getting networking and some other stuff set up, then installing gentoo. However, I haven't downloaded it yet so don't quote me on that.

Not sure about your question for Kanotix. Go here (http://kanotix.com/info/download_en.php), pick a mirror or the torrent and start downloading.

Remember, you can use a 32-bit LiveCD on an A64. When you install, you will just have to download a 64-bit distro and use that.

PS its my desktop

EDIT: or before we do this do you want a list of my main hardware componets? so we can make sure of compatibility.

EDIT: also would i be able to use some sort of graphical server hosting program kinda like whats on analougx's website and host a website even though comcast (i think its them doing this) wont let me host one on windows.

what about for the distro i have. will americas army work. i also never tried this for windows. i read someplace that i can play warcraft 3 on linux but i dont think i would be able to play online. since its through wine. all i want is some fun online games.

MAJOR QUESTION.
about my ATI 3d card. should i keep it. 9800 pro? or switch it to my ti 200?

I downloaded the readon .sh file i run it in the konsole and it says "install-radeon-debian.sh: Permission denied" well it says more but i dont know if it is safe to give away folders.
Are you running the script as root? That is a common error message for something like that. Also, if you get your ATI 9800 drivers working, just keep it. It'll take a little more work than nVidia, but you'll just learn more about your system that way .

root@location663:/home/jmangano# '/home/jmangano/Desktop/install-radeon-debian.sh'
bash: /home/jmangano/Desktop/install-radeon-debian.sh: Permission denied

i just tried to run the armyops221-linux.run and it opens in a text editor. same thing with double clicking the radeon install .sh file when i ran the radeon install i drag it into the konsole and hit enter and thats how i got the message. same thing with the armyops. am i running it wrong?

EDIT: ok i think i got it. i right click on it. and open with "root shell"

or go to a console and type:

su
<root password>
chmod +x programyouwanttomakeexecuteable
./programyouwantomakeexecuteable

you need to make them executeable after you download them. You probably also need to extract them, but it appears you already figured it out. You want to execute them from a console so that if there is an error, etc. you can see it. I downloaded America's Army also, but have not had a chance to install it. Have fun.
