8887 LCD/display out

Yesterday, the display began to dim on the left side of screen while the right side seemed fine. Today, however, the screen is will not power up-is black. Hooked up a monitor to the external jack, and rcvd an error out of frequency range. Warranty is 8 months expired. Doesn't seem like an LCD inverter could cause this problem, and suspect the ATI Mobility 9000.

Looking for a suggestion. Is the ATI card difficult to replace? I'll email Sager, but can't afford a large post Christmas bill. This stinks, as I am in the middle of an online college course, and an extended repair will bury me.

Thanks in advance......

that SUCKS dood. but i got nothing. no clue, other than to take it apart and look at it. must assume it's a bad component, and those are not cheap to replace, but im sure they are cheaper than buying a new 8890. good luck. maybe you'll get lucky and it's just the lcd cord pinched inside the lappy. (doubtfull).

It dosen't sound like the LCD inverter. However the fact that dimmed on one side dosen't seam like the video card. The inverter is not that expencive maby $50-$100. I agree with buddasak it could be a pinched LCD cable in the notebook. The error that you got on the external monitor might be caused by display properties. Was the monitor you pluged in fairly new? Older monitors do not support settings like 1024 by 768 or higer. The hertz is also a key factor in having the monitor work, however it's hard to know if a second monitor on you notebook in inabled of what settings it using. Your best bet is to take somewhere with a new high-end monitor and try it there. You might then be able to change some settings.

Good luck.

Thanks for the replies. Most appreciated. FYI, Sager's response included the following:
Check on the right hand side, under the LCD hinge should have a backlite
switch, if stuck then no LCD backlite, if not the switch problem then sent
it back.
***Out of warranty service, we need 10 working days before contact you for
the estimate.
The minimum charge is $45 (estimate fee).
labor $80 + shipping + parts
If you want 3 working days fast service, extra charge $45 will be apply.
If you decide not to fix, then we charge $45 estimate fee + shipping.

Hmm. I did try another newer monitor, and get the following display error while loading WINXP, however, after XP loads the external monitor syncs and operates normally.
OUT OF RANGE
H 30-62 KHZ
V 50-75 HZ

Just like Pistoff in a previous post, I can see the desktop and icons with direct outside lighting shining on the LCD. Does the LCD inverter control the LCD backlight, or are they separate circuits? Wish there were a post with pics on inverter/backlight repair since this seems to be a common problem with the 8887's.

Oh BTW, the hinge switch was not stuck.
