My Dad got his 9860 a few days ago and he has been experiencing the no boot problem since he pulled the machine out of the box. All drivers have been updated. Could be a ram problem but I have not been able to get it to boot to the memtest CD to test. Floppy just arrived today so we may try again today.

Left a message on the sager support line two days ago.. again this morning. No response yet.

I should add - The machine did boot a few times on the first day but has since gone completely T.U. Same deal as freakizoid: clock is working, fan comes on, CD drive clicks a few times, all lights come on, but no boot.

Does not seem likely that it will boot from the Floppy for memtest because the Bios never loads. We will try but I think a rapid RMA is in order.

My clock does NOT show up baidarkabob. But sounds like were having a similar issue. Mine was working perfectly for the last 4-5 days right out of the box and i have tested it thoroughly with every app and game i use. its just odd.

Freakizoid, we are reseating the ram and HD this morning. Will let you know if it helps. Have you tried this?

no cuz if the HD or RAM wouldnt work youd most likely get some kind of erro on screen, and my clock doesnt show up whereas yours does. so it may work for you. someone said to remove teh battery and try that, and i did and that didnt work. I just talked to pctorque and they gave me the rma number for sager so i called them and left a message for a RMA number. After dropping 4 grand i should not have to reseat anything, so its going back.

Re-seating did not work for us.

Is this RAM paired or can i remove one stick to test the other?

Check this post - there is a bug in the raid controller that may corrupt the boot table - update your bios to the newest version. To repair the drives you may need to plug them into another computer to do a chkdsk.....

I just recieved it 4 days ago so i assume it has the latest bios since the latest one contains the clock feature in the dj station on the front. and 2nd, i did not get a raid configuration with my setup. thanks for trying to help though. spoke with sager and they suggessted a reseat of the HD and ram which i did and didnt fix anythign so ill be sending it back tommorow for a replacement.

No, the firmware above is newer than the one that shipped with your laptop, mine included the clock and DJ functions but needed updating - compare version numbers first - and even if you don't use RAID your drives still use the raid controller to do even ATA (normal) modes.
My setup is identical to yours and suffered the very similar issues (except the bit about the flexicable). Although if your laptop is not even booting to the hardware detect screen (where the RAM does its check and lists CPU speed etc...) then one of you fundamental components (CPU, RAM) is broken - most likely the RAM - if your HDs don't detect is should still allow for booting to a cd.
One more test could be to remove all but one of you SO-DIMMS and see if that boots - try a couple of sticks. You may find it will boot then.
Good Luck

yeah. and if theres even a hint of hardware defect, id rather let the guys who know this junk way better than i do figure it out. I did what they told me and even they suggested sending it back, which is better than Dell who runs you through EVERYTHING. Hey Dell my modem is broken, "ok wed like you to reinstall windows and all yoru software while standing on your head" I'll keep everyone updated on this , with what so far has been quick and stellar support from pctorque.com and sager.

ah but wait, was just about to hit up FedEx when i got an email from Sager saying:
Hi Freakizoid, you may open the cover of the RAM. Remove 4 pieces of the RAM. Then install 1 piece back to see if the system boots up. So i did that and turns out that after many tries and reboots, one of the memory banks on the mobo is bad. So now since i can use my machine im waiting to see if theyll send me a new machine first or if they will repair this one.

well after one last email from Sager late last night, they suggessted I reseat all the RAM one at a time and try and get all the sticks working. So after much shuffling and many reboots this morning i finally got this puppy fired up with all 4 sticks, seems if theres any kind of loose contact the machine just wont boot. so a good thing to try first for anyone who has this problem again. Again awesome tech support from Sager and all emails came within about 8 hours of me sending one out.
