Sager reviews

Thread Starter
this may be a stupid question in this forum I know

But why is it there on no reviews on Cnet, ZDnet, toms hardware etc. on Sager's. I only stumbled on this site by accident and have been lurking for about a week or so and have found it to be one of the most comprehensiv informative laptop sites I have been on.

I intend on puchasing a Sager for myself. I am just curious why I could not find any 3rd party reviews by the biggie websites...Are there any that anyone knows in addition to the excellent information on this forum?

Anyone have a Sager in the Houston area? I have not been able locate one to even look at touch feelsee in all of Houston......

This will be my own first laptop purchase for myself. ( I bought a couple of Compaq 2100's for my kids in school and they are pretty neat..)

I am relatively new at this laptop thing but I find I sure as heck enjoy the computer much more in my easy chair.

Next week we get DSL >I recieved all th router, cards, print server today from ech Depot and now I am waiting on the Modem from Sprint for DSL..... Never had wiresless or any type of network before so this should prove to be most interesting.

Thanx for listenin'

Basically, companies like dell, toshiba, and compaq PAY those web sites and give one to them for their reviews. Sager doesn' give out any laptops and they don't pay anyone to say nice things abou them. That's why they aren't on those websites. It also allows them to keep their overhead down so they can charge less for the same hardware.

This new smiley is so wierd...I like it.

Sounds like your Reseller got to eat that one, as UPS/FedEx never refund anything for their mistakes, it seems...

Another reason why I like Sagers. There are some great resellers out there who really aim to please.

There are a couple of reviews out there, as PowerNotebooks has sent (given?) a couple of units here and there; none of the "mainstream" review sites you mentioned, Ray, because it is as baurelio stated: you pay to get good reviews... you pay to give your competitor's bad reviews.... give away hardware and other bribes. It's not a nice business (the business of "reviews") that's why I'll take an honest John Q. Public review (good and bad) over a "Professional" review anyday.

Ray,

I too was a bit put off that I had never heard of Sager, or Clevo before. I was looking for anything but a Dell, excpet at the Dell price. Somehow, and I don't recall exactly how, I too stumbled upon this forum.

Purchasing from Pctorque has been a refreshing experience (received 4760 about 2 weeks ago). However, I contacted several other Sager dealers, and they were similarly pleasant to deal with. I kind of got the "too good to be true" hairs on the back of my neck standing up. Usually everyone who has made a high tech purchase has been burned at least once.

However, as a skeptic, I have had my expectations exceeded every step of the way. The only hiccup was a delivery problem that was caused by PCTorque, yet acknowledged and remedied in less time than a Dell support person could answer their phone.

These folks are the real deal.

I clearly remember coming across this forum when I was researching Alienware laptops (Go ahead, laugh). Anyway, I saw several people on several sites claiming that Sager was a way better company, and you could get tons for less. That's how I came across Powernotebooks.com, and eventually the Sager Forums and PC Torque. Boy am I happy now . And I don't care if anybody at my school has heard of Sager, cause if they want to talk, then I'll just whoop them with benchmark scores.

Actually probably 90% of the people that came to these forums the first 6 months or so found it through alienware. (thanks would have to go to AW for the free advertising )

With the growing sager 'awareness' on the net the figure should be dropping a bit.

I heard of Sager on a digital pro Photographgers forum. Someone was asking for a good laptop recomendation. The 3 people that responded all mentioned Sager.

I was a little disappointed that I could not find any reviews or much information on Sager on the net. Then again the forum provided a lot of good info. Reading reviews and the tech support forums you can get a good feel for the product.

I am a quiet customer so other then ordering my 8890 yesterday and an e-mail to alert PC Torque about my incomming wire to pay for it that should be all they hear from me... Ok, ok besides my nagging in a few hours to chec and see if they got the wire.

One of teh other things that I like is that if there is a problem Sager is only 20 minutes or so from my house. So I can hand deliver my laptop and wait out on the curb while it gets fixed if there is any issue. Although I migh need to go tent shopping. With Cannons west coast repair location 30 minutes from me I feel good about any potential repairs that I might need on any of my photo related equipment.

Just makes me wonder... where is Adobe?

I came across the forum when I was posting in the forum for my car (www.eclipseforums.org) for their "dream laptop"... One of them sent me a link to the 8887 on PC-Torques site, I followed a link, and boom, here I am buying the 8890 (and 3k poorer, but hey).

ironically i found out about sager from macrumors.com...those mac ppl over there said that if i dont end up buying a powerbook, the next best thing would be a sager as far as value, tech support and quality are concerened. i still dont know whether to get a sager or a powerbook just yet. my windows xp registry just decided not to work and i had to format this morning so im leaning towards the powerbook even more

Same here. I found about Sager via Macrumors. How strange is that? There are three things I need to upgrade or flat out buy.
  • My G4 450Mhz Cube - waiting for dual processor upgrade with new VRM
  • A replacement for my old P2-266Mhz lappy and P3-550 HP Vectra desktop - the Sager 8890 will serve as the replacement for both obsolete PCs.
  • The new G5 dual 2.0 Ghz Powermac - waiting for Panther to be released.
Since the Sager 8890 does not offer all the options that I want, I am playing the waiting game. One of the three items on my list will make it to the finsh line and that will be the day I make a purchase of said item.

i came accross sager, pctorque, and these forums by researching the alienware laptop and looking at the user reviews on cnet. i know that cnet is a joke, but the user reviews can be decent.

I found Sager / Sagerforums / PC Torque via GOOGLE. Heck, I find *everything* via Google.

Yeah, it does pay to have a non-obtrusive ad (a la google-style), as I clicked through and voila! 2,400+ posts later, I am a hooked Sager-owner and looking forward to the next one I get.

I didn't need light-weight or portability (other than moving from my workstation area to the couch - now I'm permanantly hooked up to the couch ).

Besides, this is an excellent forum for just hangin' out and talking about laptops and technology in generalized terms (and very specific for Clevo laptops). Great folkes, lose mods, etc.

I learned about Sager from the Dell forums. Someone there suggested that people send back their defective screen dells (when dell refused to admit there was a problem...they actually claimed that it was NORMAL for an LCD to BURN IN!! ) and check out Sager. I googled and found this site...now I'm awaiting the arrival of my 8890
post #17 of 24

me too

I got here by looking at Alienware. Glad I did.

I just ordered an 8890 about 20 hours ago...now can't wait for it to show up.

I'm an IT manager and avid game player, but this will be my first laptop.

it's kind of funny how a thread asking why sagers aren't reviewed by the major companies turns into everyone posting about how they found out about sagers.

I discovered Sager via Google Groups, specifically searching for "quality" laptops. I lurked on these forums for a couple of months before finally deciding on a 5670 from PC Torque. I believe I lucked out and got one of the last units with the Wide Angle UXGA. Sweet indeed!!

Threadjacking. It's an art.
