Follow this guide for easy keyboard removal on the m68xx line (and the likes.)

EDIT: To remove only the keyboard remove only the two middle rear-most screws from the underside.

Screen removal by request

EDIT: if anyone would like the full size images, I can e-mail them to you, each pic wieghs in at ~600KB. Just send a request to penglord at mindspring dot com

EDIT 2: to remove the screen, you will also need to remove the top two, outer-most screws from the underside (both 6mm in legnth).

We have so many different posts with pics on taking apart the emac/gateways- does anyone have the resources (see time) to put them all together as one sticky thread or better yet a PDF file?

That's kinda the reason I tried to put all the pertinent info into the images themselves, that way they can be more easily archived without the need for a long write-up. If I had the time I'd be willing to put together a full disassembly turtorial in PDF form, but it took me almost 2 hours just to swap out the memory card reader and edit the images I took for what little I did do. Maybe if something else breaks, I'll take more pics and do a proper "How-To" article, but for now that sucker is sealed tight and I don't have plans to tear it apart again until I buy 2GB of RAM and a faster HDD in a few months.

I'm sure I speak for everyone, as well as for myself- Thanks for the pics! They are greatly appreciated.
I'm talking about having one thread with all the pics from various sources (threads) on them.
If I have time this week, I'll take a crack at it- possibly someone who has experience might volunteer

There's a couple screws on the bottom of the drive. Simply remove them and slide the drive out.

Right mouse button

Okay, this right mouse button thing (below the touchpad) is really starting to bug me! Now it is worse than ever! I have to basically put mega amounts of pressure on it to make it work.

Does anyone have any pics on taking the mouse buttons off? It looks like there is a lip holding the buttons in, so they cannot be taken off externally. I dont know how to take the computer apart....yet, but if someone already has, and has some pics or advice, I would love to hear it. I use this laptop on airplanes alot, and an external mouse is just not an option, so I gotta get this right mouse button problem solved!

Peng Lord do you have instructions for replacing the memory card reader? I've taken the keyboard off but I'm a little at a lose as to what to do next.

Card Reader Removal

In order to remove the card reader you will have to remove the screen and the entire top cover in order to access the screws.

There are three screws that you will need to remove. Two are towards the front on the left and right tabs that bold the card reader to the aluminum chassy. the third is in the center at the back of the card reader and bolts to a standoff.

Once you remove them, you can slide the cardreader back, up, then out.

I just finished cleaning my cardreader and if you look at the pictures, you can see the tab on the left and right where the screw holes are. you can also see the rear center hole.

hey,i too need to replace my cd drive, so i bought a new one on ebay. i unscrewed the 2 screws but when it slides out, there's still the brown film thing attached. do i have to open the laptop up and remove that? if possible can i get a stepby step procedure on how to remove and put a new on in? thanks

I'm not so sure I know what you mean by "brown film thing". If I get a chance, I will jerk mine out soon and check it out. At any rate, there shouldn't be anything securing the optical drive besides the two screws.

hey, thanks for the reply, the case is that the thing where you put the cd, it snapped in half, so if your viewing regularly, the strip orange on the top, and blacksih brown on the bottom. its like one of the cables. so do i pull it out? i can take a picture with my phone if youd like. thanks (btw model is m6805)

That is the IDE cable that is internal to the drive casing itself. It is directly connected to nothing on the machine. If you have the two screws out of the bottom of the machine, the entire housing should pull out. It will take a little bit of effort just from the pins being pushed into the IDE channel, but it should come free.

Edit: The two you need to remove are the two marked "A" in the original post in the first picture, left side.

hey man. just read your posts. thanks for clarifying what i had to do. though it took me a while to get it out, it got out. i feel so much better now not having to go to bestbuy and pay em to fix it! all i gotta do now is wait for my new cd drive to come in from ebay. also, i wanna let you know i havent used this since about 2 years. can i pm you if i have any questions about updating the bios and what not? thanks a million
