I am going to order a Sager 8890. I am definitely getting a 60 gig 7200 rpm drive. My question is what are the advantages/disadvantages of getting a second 60 gog 7200rpm drive or a 200/250 gig 7200 rpm external drive? The 60 gig is $385 compared to around $300 for the 200/250 gig external.

Got a good point there. I don't know what the transfer rate is with an external drive, but it probably really doesn't matter that much. 60 gigs on the internal drive should provide enough room for most high speed tranfer needs. One advantage I see with an external drive is its a heck of a lot more secure. Someone comes sniffing around your machine, if the external drive isn't connected, its not there to check out. You can simply put it away. Its also great for data security, as you'd probably leave it at home and if your baby does get lost or worse, at least your data is secure at home. Plus, with external drives, you have virtually unlimited storge. Want to work on your engineering, pop in the engineering drive. Want to do some serious gaming, pop in your gaming drive. And, as you point out, the cost per gig is substantially better with the external drive.

im getting the new 5 series with one 60GB @ 7200, the price for these new drives are insane... instead of getting the raid setup i will take the extra 380$ saved and get a 200GB external @ 7200 for about 295$

I got a 120 GB external wd caviar drive. The only problem is you cannot raid0 the drives. Aside from that it is actually kinda neat to have something that I can connect to virtually any computer with usb ports and use the data on the drive.

ryanniedz, how is the access time on the external? I don't know if I want to do raid. I am going to use my laptop for work and at home and I don't want to lose data running raid 0.
