Pci express to Agp?

I currently have an Inspiron XPS with the radeon 9700 in it and I am looking to upgrade the graphics card in the near future.

I was going to just go with the 9800 radeon agp card, but a Dell sales rep. told me the new x850 is going to be released with an AGP interface of some sort. Is this even possible?

I was under the impression that the new x series cards are pci express with 16x and the best agp is only 8x. Is there some kind of adapter that Dell would be planning on using to fit the x850 to an XPS with Agp interface? Or is the sales rep. blowing sunshine my way?

Am I missing something? Is the Xps already able to accept pci express chips? Will the Agp just go unused? Any info. on the subject would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Wow... thanks a million for the heads up!

I doubt the dell rep was "blowing sunshine" your way, because that seems like the last thing a sales person would do... However, he could just be plain wrong =)

So... did we get a date?

[Note how quickly I went from you to we]

Technically, PCI-E-to-AGP and backwards is a simple thing. Great news here is that a Dell sales rep gave this info. Not that I entirely believe every sales rep but I can hope... It could be the same 9800 with enabled pipes, for example.
It was said many times that Dell promised (and fullfilled the promise) one upgrade for 9100/xps - where exactly this information about ONE upgade came from?

yeah i found this link in another thread after I started this one. Thanks to suryad for finding the link and posting it.
The Dell rep I was playing e-mail tag with only said the x850 was coming soon, he didn't give a date exactly. He definitely did know my system was the Inspiron Xps, and he did say that it would have an agp interface.
I'm sure the performance won't be as good as if you plugged into a pci express slot, but looking at what the x850 can do, I think it will be worth it.
more importantly it will give us a few more years use out of our nifty agp laptops that we just bought.

He knew it was a xps but did he know it was a laptop?

Exciting, isn't it? I'm not a marketing guy but here's another thing that might be interesting. The price of MR9800 recently went up from $359.10 to $399.00 - probably it's done especially to have space to go down when new card will be released...

Good point.
Jet B, did he know you wanted 9800 radeon MOBILITY in the first place.

Yes I was playing e-mail tag with him for a while and I told him it was an "Inspiron" XPS, I also gave him my service tag, so there shouldn't have been any confusion.
The original reason I contacted him was because the canadian dell site doesn't even have any 9800 mobility chips for the inspiron xps. Maybe they don't want to stock up when they know the x850mobile will be released in 2 months when the rialto bridge chip is ready? Just guessing don't quote that as fact.

I also just sent him another e-mail, asking him to clarify and to make sure he wasn't mistaking my system for the desktop Xps.

Is the plain X850 even available yet? (Not to mention the x850 mobile)

It seems to be, seeing as I just built a desktop Xps on the dell site with the x850 card option. They do say it may delay the ship date though.

I will post any new info. once the Dell sales rep. I talked to gets back to me. I asked him to make sure he wasn't quoting me desktop stuff even though I made it clear I have an Inspiron Xps.

sorry guys, but ATI wouldn't produce mobility agp cards any more...

Be on the lookout for high-end PCI Express mobile graphics in the near future. If this is ATI’s last AGP-based high-end mobile graphics solution, they’ve certainly chosen to go out with one last kickass product.

But i've read this somewhere else, dunno where, sorry, still lookin' for it...

PS: Well, well, the Dell customer service :P

err the 850 is only a desktop card. i think the rep prob thought the dimension xps gen 4 model. tho there is a pci to agp bridge and ati seems like they are going to be not leaving us in the dark here, but an x850 in a latop!!! wow man i hope you are right!!! especially if we get an upgrade option!!

Well... you really put words in their mouths. They don't discuss or claim that ATI would stop producing agp cards. All they say is that IF they would, then they would be fine with it.
they wont make mobility agp cards but they will make mobility pci express cards and with a bridge to agp on it as an option!!! thats my 2 cents.

I have also read from several sources that stated ATI and NVidia would not be making AGP laptop video cards any more. Note that the x850 is a desktop card that just got released- it costs $500+ dollars too. I know there are ways to adapt PCI-E cards to an AGP bus, but aren't laptop graphics cards too compact to be adding on bridging equipment? Is it even possible to do this in a laptop environment since all of the connectors are compact?

good point about the connectors 007.

Someone mentioned a price increase - I can confirm this from the swedish dell site too. The price almost doubled. ON THE OTHER HAND they got all kinds of free stuff, so the final price is the same... for a complete machine, that is.

Agree with 007

Well, the Dell sales rep. hasn't returned my latest e-mail. It is possible he was speed reading my stuff and overlooked that I was talking about Laptop cards all along, I don't know.

I will still post something when he gets back to me. It still would seem strange to me that he would say the x850 is coming soon if he was talking about desktop equipment, the x850 is already available. I guess he may have meant the agp to pci e. bridge, time will tell.

I really was hoping to get several years out of my Xps laptop by upgrading it along the way, so I sure hope Dell comes up with some sort of laptop agp pci E. interface.

All in all, it is still a kick butt gaming machine for the now and now. Even with the mobility 9700.
