Problems with my desktop and 9800 Pro

Ok. My custom desktop has been running fine for the last 3 months. I just got a 3.0C and a 9800 Pro for Christmas and ever since then the computer has been ****ed up. It restarts randomly, it gives me the BSOD, and it says that the WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\system is corrupt or missing about 1 out of 3 times I turn on the computer. I have reformatted about 5 times now and I feel like throwing it out the computer. I also don't get why I got 1792 marks on 3DMark05. I do not think that is good for a 9800 128mb Pro. The specs were 2.4 w/o HT 533 FSB, 350w power, 512 corsair pc3200 (ran at 2700/333), 64mb geforce 4 ti4200, 2 HD, 2 DVD burners, Sound blaster AUDIGY 2. I have changed it now to a 3.0 w/HT 800FSB, ram went up to 3200/400, 9800 128mb pro. I am really getting tired of this computer. Does anyone know where a good forum might be to post this at? Once again I do not think 1792 marks are good for the setup I have. Also, the cpu temp does not go above maximum recommended temperature and I have a Thermaltake Spark 7 cooler. I installed the latest Catylst drivers and I have a REMOTE WONDER II that for some reason does not work because the tray icon does not show up and I think there is a conflict with the software. Thanks to anyone who can help.

Sounds like a power supply issue. Either too small, too much on one rail, or it's about to die.

no but also gives me blue screen of death with all sorts of different errors, error on windows\system32.... and does it randomly

if you can find another stick of ram or run memtest on your current one when you can boot up, i would suggest that.
Yeah, it sounds like coffee might be right on this one. Run Memtest/Prime95 on the memory and look into replacing your power supply. if you want a suggestion, i run a Thermaltake 420w with a P4 2.8, 9600xt, 768mb RDRAM, one HD and 2 ODs perfectly. Good luck, mate.

BTW, the TT PSU i was suggesting is $36 at newegg IIRC.

cant delete?

U don't have your old GPU - try running that with your CPU...

Also try Changing your memory settings, (if its not your CPU) Cas Latency and such...

try changing them to a normal setting.

The main thing your going to try to do is Narrow it down to one component...
It has to be your cpu or your video card, If you upgraded those recently, so try starting with those...

If i remember also your check your ATI card and voltage compatiblity here:

anyone know of another forum I can post this on? I ran memtest and no errors were found. I also ran Hot CPU test and no errors were found. I do not get it. Do you think it could be the Catylst drivers? I have the newest 4.12 and I still have my geforce 4 ti4200 and 2.4ghz cpu.

Hard drive crapped out?

I know when my hdd went out it wouldn't go past the agp440.sys and sometimes it would go all the way into windows...

It also gave bsod and a buch of other crap wouldn't work....

ok. So I put the 2.4 back in and it works fine. I am thinking it is a memory problem. When it runs at 333 which the 2.4 only supports it runs fine. When the 3.0 is put in, the frequency is brought up to 400 automatically because it is PC3200 Ram. It is made by Crucial (I just realized that I put corsair up top). I do not know why this is happenning. The people I bought the cpu from tested the cpu and guaranteed non doa (Northwood). I think I am going to call up Crucial and see what they say because about 2 hours ago I had the 3.0 in and the windows would boot up to desktop then go to bluescreen each time for about 5 times and then I put the 2.4 back in and no problems.

What kind of motherboard do you have? It could be a problem with the motherboard not supporting the CPU/RAM higher speeds.

If the system is automatically detecting 400MHz increase, then it supports the speed. I still believe this may be a power supply problem.

1. Are you sure it's a Northwood? A Northwood would only pull about 64 Watts, where as a Prescott, or even Willamette would pull around 96 - 100 Watts.

2. What size, make and model power supply are you running?

3. Please provide a complete list of all components in the system.

Mainboard
RAM (number of sticks)
Processor (Size & Serial Numbers)
Video Card
Sound Card (if Audigy, are you running the front drive)
Hard Drives (How many, and what speed, ie. 7200, 10,000, 15,000)
CD/DVD Drives (How many, make and model)
How many Fans?
Any cold cathodes?
Water Cooling?

1. I am sure it is a Northwood and as per Okle's reply it is a Intel D865PERLL

2. It is a 350w powersupply that came with my Aspire X-Infinity case. I believe it says Turbolink.

3. Intel D865PERLL extra L is for onboard lan

2-256mb ram running in Dual channel PC3200 by Crucial

2.4C no HT 533FSB, and a 3.0C 800FSB with HT Serial 3317A166-0360

ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb

Sound Blaster Audigy 2 no front drive (front drive is Platinum)

#1: Seagate Barracuda 80GB I believe is 7200 but could be 5400. #2: Western Digital 60GB 7200RPM both running IDE/ATA

Philips DVD+RW-D28, Lite-On DVDRW LDW-411S

120mm Fan as "exhaust", NO SIDE PANEL, Vantec PCI fan card, Thermaltake Spark 7 cpu cooler, 80mm near bottom front, 80mm on top w/ blue LED (came with case), 2 fan HD cooler, Arctic Silver on CPU, VGA Silencer for my 9800 Pro

No cathodes and no water cooling.

Quick question. Since I am already using up all the IDE channels with 2HD and 2DVDRW can I get a SATA drive and run three HD? I need more space and I do not want to get rid of my two right now. Also, WITH THAT SETUP why would I get 1792 on 3DMARK05???

ok so I ran it again with the 2.4 in and I got a 2241. Still not good but what can I do?
If it's a Northwood (and I'll have to assume it is at this point), and you have no external USB/Firewire devices pulling power from the mainboard, then your system is pulling roughly 331 Watts of power. Given that most power supplies only put out 60% - 70% of their power under normal operation (remember, the 350W is going to be MAX the unit is capable of putting out) then you are really taxing that power supply. Once again, you are roughly trying to put 216 watts of power down a single rail that's only supposed to support a maximum of 180 Watts (130 Watts sustained output)

Try unplugging everything in the system, except for your video card, necessary fans (cpu, vid card), and your one boot up hard drive and see if that helps anything.

Ok, but why would it then give me BSOD? Also, as per my last reply, can I put 3 HD in my computer since I have all IDE/ATA channels taken? 2 DVD drives, 2 HD on IDE/ATA, then put 1 on SATA?

Edit: Does it matter what brand of power supply you buy?
Yes, because if it's some sh!tty generic brand, it won't be as stable or put out as much of the total possible power as it really can. Brands that I know to be very good/stable/expensive are Antec, Enermax, OCZ Powerstream, Ultra (Xconnect Modular ::drool), and Vantec. Good luck, chuck!

what about ones that aren't expensive but still good for my setup.
