How do you connect 8887 spdif to a Stereo?? Help!!

Thread Starter
I have an 8887 and having a hard time connecting the spdif to my stereo. I have some sort of 2 headed dongle that came with my machine. One "head" is, or looks like a female RCA plug. The other accomodates a 1/8 inch headphone/speaker (etc.) plug. Hopefully you know what I am talking about.

When I connect RCA plugs to either of the 2 heads (with my best Frankenstein splitters) and connect the other ends to my stereo I get halfway decent audio out of my stereo, but there is a nasty low tone feedback that can be heard when the audio is paused or quiet. This feedback does not subside even when there is no audio being passed. It only goes away when I pull the plug. This is leading to my question...

I would like to use the full capability of the spdif on my machine, but I am not sure what configuration of cables to use. I have both optical and digital coax inputs on my stereo so either one is an option. (Of course I have the standard RCA type inputs as well.)

My best guess is that there is a digital coax cable that plugs into one of the heads on the dongle and then into the back of my stereo's digital coax port. Is this close to being right?? Thanks for any help!!

A hum like that is most commonly attributed to poor grounding between the systems. My father had the same problem connecting his desktop to his stereo. It was significantly decreased when we grounded the two together (take a piece of wire and connect each end to the metal on the chassis of the computer and the chassis of the stereo).

EDIT: The other option could be to use the Optical connection also as there is no metal wiring to conduct the "dirty electricity".
