major setback... i was trying to get a good dry paint, so i put the plastice in the oven. worked good the first day, so the next day I made the temp higher. the result => the top base plastics got bent really bad. i now have to get some plastics... hope compman has some

I really want to get into modding my laptop, but before I do that, I really have to get quality components, such as a larger, faster hard drive and more RAM. I dont plan to do anything as extreme as painting my laptop, but I am still planning on doing the keyboard light mod as well as a few other 'low risk' mods.

Yeah, your pretty much right. However, I have seen inside the M505X/XL and there is definately enough room for an LED, a resistor, and some thin fiber optics. As for the BT adapter, that might be a little tricky, and would take up one of your USB drives in the process.

well, i'm only doing it because i have 2 M6805s .

The mod of the mods for an M505X is to upgrade the CPU to a dothan with fsb133. That would make this lappy more sweet
post #26 of 49
fsb133? You mean 533, right? And to add to that, you know thats impossible, right?

You know, that if you want to achive something, nothing is imposible

What about a DOTHAN 2ghz, with the normal fsb 100
post #28 of 49
He's not wrong by saying fsb133mhz, it's just quad pumped

You've seen the inside of a M505X?? Is the CPU in a ZIF socket or soldered on?

If it's in a socket I don't see why we can't go to the 2.1Ghz Dothan if money isn't a problem. The motherboard uses the same chipset.

Do post back please, because you've got me dreaming
post #29 of 49
I know that the Banias and Dothan use the same socket, therefore making them interchangable. I didnt know there was a 2.1Ghz Dothan, I thought the cutoff was at 2Ghz.

Someone cracked this baby open on this forum and posted a picture. I cant really see the processor from this angle because its under the fan, but at least you can take a look at whats right under the keyboard.

(Clear shots of WiFi card & Second IDE Channel)

Additionally, aren't all P-M processors not soldered on?
hey... lookin' good! Well, P-M CPUs are soldered on in thin/lightweight laptops to reduce weight, etc. Although our laptop isn't that lightweight, it is thin, and plus some manufacturers just like to save on cost by ditching the socket. It's not like the average laptop user will do this

Yeah the 2.1Ghz is listed on Intel's website. I haven't spent much time looking around to see if it's actually available.

I can't tell where the 2nd IDE channel is... help? I think the BEST way to take advantage of it is to move the optical drive to that channel instead of slaving it to the HD. I don't know if I got the shaft, but that's how my M505X is set up. It bites cause everytime the DVD/CD-RW drive access something, the system hangs (HD mainly) for a few sec. It's basically stupid to have these two devices on one channel while the 2nd one sits there not doing anything. But I am guessing the IDE connector for optical is soldered in? I can't really tell with the pic, sorry i got bad eyes lol Otherwise, this "mod" is, in my opinion, the most needed and practical.
The second IDE channel is that bar code thing you see in the lower right-hand corner. It would be right below where your left, down, and right keys are.

It would be great to see pics of what you have done so far- also you might want to post pics of the melted parts in the disaster thread
post #33 of 49
hah, laughing at other ppls misery rn't u? i will post some pics later today ot 2morrow.

PLEASE DO NOT TRY WHAT YOU SEE IN THE PICTURES AT HOME!!!

only posted the nuked parts... the rest when it's all over

they look like this. i could probably fix them, but it would b too much work. i also found 2 places where i can buy those parts, so fixing is on the last place.

for the buton plastic i blame my mom cause she got it out and bent it like hell (and that part shouldn't have bent on its own ).

anyway, lowered the tempo now and everything is good. for the remaining parts that is

I plan on painting my M6811 one day, I have the cracked hinge issue but I have yet to get the time to be able to ship it to Emachines for the official repair "I cleaned the area up a little & Epoxied the cracks & so far they have not grown so maybe later when I have the time to have my lappie down for a bit I'll try to clean my repairs up a little "sanding & what not" & paint the whole thing...

BTW where can you get the mobo & other parts for our M68XX or Voodoo M860 models at?
just make sure it's hot outside... a couple of ppl told me that b4 i got started... and looks like i should have listened 2 them (actually i would have been done 3 weeks ago if iwouldn't have messed up on the final step lol). the cold weather is a problem because it takes more time for the paint to dry... and sometimes it wrincles

so good luck

Just as an update ... I was fixing someone's Dell (hehe) and I needed to retrive their stuff off their hard drive, but I didnt have an external enclosure for the 2.5" drive. So I whipped out my trusty Gateway M505, removed the subwoofer, popped in the drive and boom! I was in business. The moddability of the extra bay to have both the HD and the Sub is nilch, but if you can get creative with an IBM CF Drive, you may have something.

Now with a little 'cutting' you can remove the subwoofer and make a tray for the IDE drive, but I wouldnt want to do that with my only subwoofer. So does anyone know if a way I can pester Gateway for a new subwoofer?

-Cool-
whoa... so you're saying if I remove the subwoofer module the 2.5inch IDE connector is exposed? I thought from the picture the 2nd IDE connector is accessible from inside only (i.e. take apart keyboard, etc).

btw, to remove the subwoofer module, I only need to remove one screw and it slides out, right?
Yeah remove that one screw and just pull the sub out. The connector is exposed completely. It may be a little difficult to plug in the drive, as there isnt a tray or something for it to slide into. Just insert it as best as you can without breaking any pins and you'll be fine.

Hey coolnet:

is there any way that we can have both the subwoofer and another drive via some kind of ide cable or something? It's a separate IDE channel right? or is it on the same channel as the Optical drive? If not maybe we can squeeze both the subwoofer and an IBM CF drive or something.

let's keep this thread alive...
