New Firmware ?

Hi everyone !
I just got an EMail from Sager Support with a flash file. It looks identical to the last update, same size, same name, but ...... the modified date of the Bins differs.... they are modified on 30.12.2004, the old ones had been modified on 24.12. ---- and I got some other instruction, so I guess something changed. Okay, I will be careful this time, here it is for you to download and test, you take responsibility yourself......

If this is the same as the last one, tell me and I (or a mod) will delete this thread.

Here the Mail with instructions:

-------------------------------------------------------------
Hi, we have the KBC firmware update.

Please download the attached file 986bv02c.zip.
Unzip the file to your hard drive.

The file 986bv02c.iso is the image of a bootable disk with all the files for
updating the system BIOS.

Burn the 986bv02c.iso to a CDR or CDRW disc.

Use the disc to boot the computer.

Type h8-s3 if you wish to update the KBC firmware.

Type s3 if you wish to update the system BIOS.

After the system bios flashed, the default settings is loaded. If the hard
drive was set on ATA mode, please enter the SCU. Pull down the advanced
menu. Change the hard drive to ATA mode.

It has a reasonabley important update for the hard drive controller. People are reporting also improved boot times and some changes to the DJ/time display.

@lotech
This seems to be more actual than the other bv02c update you linked to.

I got the same Email from Sager. What is the SCU for my ATA drive?

I guess the System Control Unit - the BIOS.
KBC means.... hmmm..... K? Bios Controller ---- ??? What means K ?

Did you make that update ? Any changes in fan control ?

K - may indicate (K)eyboard.

Why is this firmware not posted on their webpage?
I haven't flashed this yet because I would prefer to wait for a final solution... and i have no idea what changes this flash will make.. kinda makes me nervous.

I would feel better if the bios update was on sagers webpage and not a forum

I agree with that. I email Sager to find out what was going on and what the new bios/firmware update does. I haven't heard anything back from them and it has been a week.

Well I gave this new firmware a shot and recently I have been getting 0x7b (INACCESSABLE_BOOT_DEVICE) Stop messages. I'm not sure if this is due to the new firmware or just concurrent with my flashing the bios. In either case, I will see if I can better diagnose the problem and if it continues to occur flash back to the original BIOS. In either case; beware.

Oh, an on a side note: The fan seems to run on high nearly all the time with this firmware. My processor now idles around 40 deg C or so.

I flashed the new firmware and bios. Aquamark3 finally runs without freezing up or rebooting. Don't know what it did but it seemed to help.

I did the flash...

I noticed that the CPU fans are running all the time. I didn't really do any testing, but sitting idle the fans are running all the time and the temp is staying nice and cool..

Have the majority of 9860 owners used this? I've never flashed bio's on anything and am a little shaky on doing this myself. But if its a great improvement on cooling I would like to attempt this if anyone can give a detailed walk through I'd appreciate it.

It is actually pretty simple to do. Email Sager support to get the files if you don't have it already. Download and unzip the file to your desktop (or wherever you keep downloaded files). Use Nero SmartStart (should have come with your computer already pre-loaded) and burn the image file to a DVD. Use 'Burn image to disk' option. Once you have done that reboot your computer using the DVD drive (should do automatically since the DVD is now a boot disk). Follow the on-screen instructions. Type h8-s3 for the new firmware. Type c2 for the new bios. I've seen directions saying to type s3 for the bios but it didn't work for me and is not what is stated in the on-screen instructions. The drive configuration will default to Raid 0. If you have a single ATA drive like me you need to enter the bios when you reboot (F2) and manually change the drive option.

Did anyone happen to come across a copy of the previous bios for this? I installed the new update and everything is working fine, but having the fan run continously is a bit annoying. It used to turn on, cool down, turn off, heat up, repeat. Now it's just turn on, cool down, stay cool..

This fan noise is driving me crazy... I'm not joking, it is louder than my Dell desktop
