Installed 2GB in my 7405GX, What A Nightmare!!

I just could not wait, I had too. I will not take it back out ever. So it better work.

Oh my gosh, the speed is amazing. The 7K60 and 2GB makes it feel almost like my desktop. Ran memtest thu 3 passes and no errors. I will let it run all night to make sure.

Also the ram slot is impossible to get to. I had to make tools out of old PCI slot covers and it just barley would work. The problem is the card reader does not allow the chip to tilt enough to seat it in correctly. You have to force it literally. It is very nerve racking. Once it is in, use a mirror and MAKE SURE 100% so you don't smoke the board.

Regurdless of what others say, you do not need any tools to remove the plastic. Just your hands and a credit card. If you pry with a flat head, YOU WILL SCRATCH IT!!!!!!!!!!! Impossible not to.

I wore rubber gloves and was very carfull and there is no way for gateway to know it was tampered with.

According to thunder, the NS.XX.XX bioses on the 7405 have different motherboards in them. I think these will for sure work with 2GB outpost DDR. The other boards in the emachines and older 7405 I cannot confirm. Common sense tells me it will work. I have never yet in my life had a problem with ram upgrades, unless of course I buy from tigerdirect.

Awesome. Let me know how it goes when you do the same to your 6811 so I can copy.

Excellent! Just out of curiosity, why didn't you just remove the card reader?

Man, since Compman55 said, "The 7K60 and 2GB makes it feel almost like my desktop". I really want to upgrade my Gateway M505XL to 2GB and 7200RPM. But I will wait for the 100 GB 7200RPM. Do you think the 1GB stick from outpost.com will work on my Gateway M505XL?

I did not want to take it very far apart. I only removed KB, and metal plate. The less I take apart the less chance there is for disaster.

I do recommend taking the entire thing apart, it will make it way easier. It does feel about on par with my desktop. The HDD performance is still holding it back, the 2.5" form factor is where the bottleneck is. Plus after getting used to raid, standalone drives feel slow anyway.

My desktop:
GA-7VRXP KT333 Board
Athlon XP2600+ (266FSB) Very Rare To Find, Last 266FSB made.
1024MB PC2700 x2
2x 80GB WD Special Edition in Raid 0 (16k/16k)
GF4 Ti4600 128mb

This was one hell of a machine in its day, in another year I will replace it. I was going to replace it this year but got these laptops. I had to resolder all new capacitors on the motherboard because gigabyte happened to get a batch of the stolen electrolyte ones. And for $179.99 to replace I said I will fix it. Other than that, not a single blue screen or hiccup. AMD is really proving themselves now, compared to the crappy K5/K6 series.

Compman55, do you have any pictures of the install job? My 2gb just arrived today but I haven't installed it yet. I want to make sure I do it right

No I do not. I thought it would be a waste being there is over a million already. I think I do need to type out a real detailed set of instruction though, because there were some parts where I got stumped.

Are there any other pictures than wereshark's site?

Peng_Lord has some of a 6811 which is the same, it is in the photo section. You really don't need the pictures as much as procedures on how to do it without breaking anything.

I'll make one as I install my ram and take photos while I'm at it. Thanks for the help!

guys, be careful, don't use rubber gloves unless it's anti-static: you might "zap" the ram or the components of the motherboard. Better yet, run a piece of wire from the water faucet to your table so that you can discharge yourself before working on your laptop. By the way, congrats to compman55.

Success!

I started out using latex gloves for the external slot, but they were the dusty kind and left whitish fingerprints all over my neoprene case and the laptop. So I bare-handed it for the internal. I have a computer case nearby, so I touched that to discharge myself (it was open and the metal was exposed).

Anyway, I followed Peng Lord's instructions step-by-step and it worked beautifully. I ended up using my library card to pop things out, which worked well. If you have an old credit card, that would be great to use - the stiffer the better.

I did put a few tiny, tiny scratches on it from my jewel screwdriver, which was when I decided to use my library card. Just remember, nothing should be very hard to pop out, so don't force anything too hard.

The memory was definately the trickiest thing to get out. If you use a plastic card, it makes the job much easier. The real trick is putting the new stick IN the slot. I used a little trick tho. Getting it under the card reader and lined up isn't too hard, but pushing it in is, because there's no room to push. So, what I did was took the plastic CompactFlash card dummy and used that - it's just barely thin enough to fit inside the laptop, above the ram, plus it has a small lip. So, you put it on top of the ram with the lip facing down, move it to the back of the ram, push it down flush with the ram, then pull the dummy card towards the lcd. The ram popped right in with a few tried, then I pushed it down and it clicked into place. Just make sure it's fully seated and even across the slot connector.

I rebooted and got 2 gigs yay!

Kaido,

Where are you located? I got off the forums at 12 Midnight Eastern Time. When did you decide to do the ram install? Did ya take pics of it.

Lets both monitor our performance and error logs for awhile. Also run memtest every night and make sure it is good. If it remains stable, we will be popular!!!!!

After hearing of our sucess, everyone will be anxious and use their Christmas money to upgrade, you just wait and see...............

EST too, I was off at like 2am lol. I was just too excited to get it installed! I took a few pics of it, but Peng Lord's pictures really cover it all. All I did was follow his steps and I got it installed. It was a little tricky but I managed.

I'm going to be out of town during the day today, so I'll leave my 7405gx running memtest86+ while I'm gone.

Also, my brother ordered Transcend ram (a single stick of 1gb) and he's going to pick up his 7405gx probably tomorrow, so I'll let everyone know how that goes too.

Which brand of memory is everyone getting from Outpost? Looking at upgrading my 7405 and want to make sure that I get the right brand that will work.

From my research there has been no change in motherboard.

I'm partway there. My new 7k60 and an enclosure for the old drive just came in yesterday. (One day ahead of schedule, in fact). All I have left to do now is get 2 gigs of ram and an Audigy 2 notbook version and I'm set =D

I ran Memtest86+ for over 14 hours today. 13 tests passed, ZERO failures! I also haven't had any problems with real life applications. I give my 2gb of Legacy from Outpost two thumbs up!

yay!
