What real world speed differences are there between 4200 & 7200 rpm drives.
Uses are some games, Photo editing, buisness aps, .
Just a simple answer will do .
I had the same HD concern when I ordered my laptop!! Here are the actual speed differences (assume all are uata 100):
4200 to 7200 = 71.4% speed increase
4200 to 5400 = 28.6% increase
5400 to 7200 = 33.3%
-For more detailed specs you may have to go to each manufacturer's website-
If you were to go from 4200 to 7200, you would notice a huge difference... however, it would be short lived! In that I mean, you will notice faster boot up times & app loading times BUT
the heart of your computing -in general- lies in the cpu & ram.
IMO, spending the money for more ram (rather than a faster HD) would better suit you for "...some games, Photo editing, buisness aps, ." Get a 5400rpm for now & wait for the 7200 to drop in price!!
Since laptop HD sizes are limited, another popular work around is to get an external HD.
You may also want to consider this; an 80gig 4200rpm typically has faster access time compared with a 40gig 4200rpm because the 80gig is more 'tightly packed on the platters'.
Of course, all of this depends upon your immediate needs & budget... if you have the cash "It's better to max-out than to upgrade-away"
... well not really, but it sounded cool!
