mepis and alsa...what gives?

figured debian was the best choice for me since ubuntu worked (well..less x server) really well. so i tried mepis 2004.3 (or. .4 dont remember..has kernel 2.6.7) .

everything did work well...wifi battery... X. however.. not so much for sound. i installed the alsa packages and ran some commands i could find through about an hour of google...nah. it pays (and loops) the first second (or less) of the sound making and annoying sound. then i did something else, open the mixer and the sliders were gone...word! what did i do know?

my system specs are in the sig. the linux is mepis 2004.x w/ kernel 2.6.7 it is a debian based distro that uses apt-get to install files.

Hell, I'm from IL and I am having trouble following you. I am running MEPIS. The first thing I would suggest that you do is use the latest version which is 2004.06. I would set it up, login run Kpackage (System -> Package Manager -> Special -> APT: Debian -> Update. Load all of the updates that will load, skip any broken packages. Reboot and try your sound again. That may not fix your problem but will put you in position to get help.

i ran in terminal as root

#apt-get upate
#apt-get upgrade
(9 broken packages, later went down to 3)
#apt-get install alsa-base (and several other alsa related packages)

(memory lapse) don't rmeember what i did to have my mixer disappear.

try running "alsaconf" as root. My sound didn't work at all and then mixer would lock up when I tried to use it. After I ran alsaconf and rebooted sound magically started working...not very technical advice, but somehow it worked

In most any distribution of linux, you should be able to obtain ALSA (by apt/rpm/urpmi/yum/spells/etc). I will vouch for alsaconf. My old thinkpad 600e was great for linux except for notorious sound config problem. alsaconf immediately recognized the problem and configured it perfectly. That was with Mandrake 10.0...but alsaconf is alsaconf. It's worth giving a try whatever the distro or platform. If that doesn't work, start trawling google, etc...
