Overheat issues - please help

I'm currently playing World of Warcraft. The game started artifacting badly, eventually leading to a reboot after about 10 min, so i got ATITool and lowered my graphics clock speeds (currently 300mhz processor, 200mhz core, i have been experimenting). This solved the artifacting issue. Recenty, however, after a while of playing, the fan kicks into super fast mode and my num lock and caps lock lights flash, eventually leading to the laptop's shutting down.

It's 3.4ghz, gig ram.

Older unit, purchased in April. I'd sugggest that you blow out clean the exhaust system and the area under the keyboard. All indicators are that the machine is overheating.

What do you suggest I use to blow it out? And how do I access the area under the keyboard? Thanks.

use a can of compressed air, i've also used a vacuum before, but be careful with the vac. compressed air is about 4 bucks and is the safest method. now for the keyboard, there are i beleive 4 black tabs between the top row of keys and the silver bezal. use a small flat head screwdriver and gently push them toward the screen, it will unlatch the keyboard. to reninstall the keyboard, put it back in the same way you got it out. just press down where the latches are and it should lock in place.

I cleaned under keyboard, which was indeed very dirty. Same problem afterwards, however.

i had heat problems, still kind of do. i'm beginning to think it's something to do with the gpu. i think mine is bad (sending it in to sager tomorrow). i began noticing problems with video and heat all at the same time. can anyone verify having this same problem.

I just downloaded a temp meter, in Windows doing a little browsing/messaging the temp is 51-54C. As soon as I start playing WoW, the temp spikes up to 61C!

ataxus clean your system, open up the panels on the bottom and use some compressed air to clean the fans, exhaust, and check around the heat sink for dust, lint, etc. also clean under the key pad

oh wait, i already wrote this :- man i don't know, are you noticing video lag in your games/video playback?

No lag or video issues but without ATI Tool underclocking my GPU WoW artifacts and comp eventually reboots. This overheating thing is fairly new compared to the artifacting problem. Sounds like dust/lint or a bad fan to me

I cleaned under keyboard - it was very dirty and is now clean, but no improvement. Tomorrow I will buy compressed air for the bottom fans.

I think the best thing to do is turn on the fans, put a toothpick in between, and blow the compressed air into it then, I believe someone posted that somewhere in here.
don't turn the fans on, you'll burn them out if you have a toothpick in them. boogie man what are you on in fact turn the computer off, then turn it upside down, i would remove the two panels; one over the ram and heatsink, and the other over the hard drives and blow those two areas out real good. also blow some air into the exhaust with the covers off. good luck

Maybe he meant 'turn the laptop so the fans are up'

As soon as I launch WoW the CPU temp goes from 48-53C (idle in windows) to 60 and eventually above, to 70, where it automatically shuts down the computer. I've cleaned the fans, under keyboard, loosened screws, and cleaned around the heatsink. I emailed tech support and am currently waiting for a reply. Any other ideas? Maybe that thing with the video BIOS? It seems that anything that uses graphics causes the overheat.

do you have a northwood or prescott processor. if you have a northwood your temps seem high to me. this is just a shot in the dark, but is there possibility your heat issues has something to do with your gpu. maybe it's going out, not getting the proper ventilation. i have also heard about something they put between your gpu and motherboard, not sure what it does, but people have said it drys up and gives them problems.
From the behavior stated, I'd be more inclined to believe that the heat sink on top of the CPU is not doing it's job. Maybe it's time to apply AS5.
Which screws were loosened? If they are the ones around the CPU/Heat Sync, that may be a problem in and of itself.
what is AS5 g-omaha. what screws should be loosened under the keyboard, and does it help with temps or video? i've heard of this but have not tried it.
AS5 is Artic Silver 5. A compound that is placed between the top of the CPU and the bottom of the heat sink to assist in the thermal transfer of heat away from the CPU and into the heat sync. AS5 can not be used with the GPU on the 8790 as there really is not directly attached heat sink on the GPU.

You will need to do a search for the screws to loosen. I reviewed the thread; however, have not accomplished this action nor have I book marked that post/thread.

The screws I was concened about were those that hold the heat sync down over the CPU.
