Ultra DMA 5 Mode

I don't understand why my fujitsu mhr2040at hdd shows up as being in ultra dma 4 mode in device manager. This drive supports ultra dma5 and so does my satellite 1805-s253 laptop. I spoke to Toshiba support and they don't have an answer. If anyone is using an ultra dma 5 hdd in a similar laptop and experiencing the same let me know. If anyone has a fix I'd like to know that too. Happy New Year to all.

Im running xp pro sp2 operating system

Is Toshiba Support There?

I've posted in peer to peer support with no success. So I guess I'll try a general post too. I have upgraded the cpu on my 1805-s253 and it is running very nice. As in my previous post I'm still not understanding why my hdd is showing up in device manager as udma4 when both the m5229 ide controller used in the 1805-s253 and my fujitsu mhr2040at drive are udma5 capable. Only thing I can think of is that Toshiba spec's posted on their site are lies. Even Toshiba support doesn't have an answer as to why udma5 is not enabled in device manager.

If there is anyone out there that is experiencing the same problem with a similar laptop please let me and Toshiba support know so they can address this problem. It seems if spec's are posted on a manufacturers site they should be true!

Just curious, what did your original hard drive in the Toshiba run at?

Ultra Dma Mode

Hi Jeff

The original drive in my 1805-S253 was also running at udma4. I just put it into my daughters Uniwill 340S2 and it is running at udma2???? I quess the 1805-S253 can only support udma4. The ide controller (Ali M5229) shows it can support udma5 in Si Soft Sandra but current mode shows as udma4. I will run Sandra on my daughters machine and see what that supports.

I just upgraded my drive to a WD600VE and that also is running in udma4. Oh well I do see better performance with the p3 1.1GHZ cpu upgrade and the 5400 rpm drive though. I really would like to find out how to get it to run at udma5. Thanks for the post.
