lol, well, Im starting to get back into online gaming, and I ordered UT2004, BF vietnam, & HL-2 to start me off with my new AW when it comes...i'll talk about gaming then..lol. Oh, while im at it, should I get CoD? My favorite game of all time was the original MOH..

EDIT: Oh, astu, I dont want to get this thread all off topic, but I want to learn about OC'ing, and it looks like you OC your machine. I get flamed at every other forums for asking how to OC, so I figured you could start a thread explaining this to me, and to whoever else wants to know. I've read Tuts and stuff, but I need an actually person to help me. I know its in the Bios, and you need to increase your FBS and multiplier, but idk how much, i dont want to damage anything, and I dont want to push it to its max either. Then I read something about turning up the voltage...confusing! Also, I really dont want to add anymore cooling than AW puts in there......

the new MoH (Pacific Assault) was great but the engine of MoH and CoD really needs to be updated, after Doom3 and HL2, MoH CoD just ...... how do i put it,,,,,,, it's Lacking something.....

i was playing MoHPA before HL2, and now i just can't go back to Pacific Assault after HL2... even tho i always try to finish all the games. i hope HL2 has not ended my intrest in other games that isn't even out yet.

I have had no problems with my self-built rig (no hardware problems and have not had to reinstall Windows for well over a year). To be honest, I can't say the same for my AW laptop. I pulled the internal wireless nic out, my wired nic acts up often (think I have a bad ethernet port), I used to get BSDs until I tried several wireless nics (found a Microsoft USB 2.0 unit did the job). Somehow I still love the rig. But it has not been perfect. Almost everyone at my work has had a hell of a time with Dell laptops, so I guess it is just part of having a laptop. At least with a desktop, you can fix most problems yourself, and you know if you have good quality parts or not.

Yeah, I just leave my Area51m at work, truthfully, Im a little dissapointed in it. But Im dissapointed in all the laptops i've had.

One more thing on OCing for astu... When I OC the 6800 Ultra, do I have to use Powerstrip, because I dont want PS to have to always be running in the background. I have to use PS on my Area51m to fix the washed out screen, and I hate that everytime I boot it up I have to wait for PS to load.

Pexeter. I will assume that the comment regarding your uncles and such needing constantly to tinker with their faulty rigs was not a generalization targeting the buying over the building because if it is than its crapsville. Either your people purchased lemons or they are just boobs at building and for them sure, buying should have been a no brainer. in fact i would go so far and state that for the majority of people, buying should be the only option since for them computers are interesting only in their utility and not necessarily for the performance(of course people will buy the most bang for their buck but that doesn't assume that this performance need be perennial). The majority of computers in my house have been build and upgraded and from my personal experience with my close friends who run computer businesses, i find that the performance and reliability with a home build PC far outcasts anything that boutiques or companies can bring out. here i am talking about a true modded case and not some shit that little Joey pieced together.

Their was another comment on here about how business buy in bulk and pass the saving on to the consumer, man that comment borders on sheer stupidity, either the individual has never run a business or is not familiar with the cost advantages equalized between the inbalance of input costs and revenue. LETS READ AFTER ME BOYS AND GIRLS: A COMPANY WILL ALWAYS MARK UP A PRODUCT INDEPENDENT OF THEIR EXPLICIT COSTS DUE TO THE NEED FOR SHORT TERM PROFIT. SIMILARLY, THE MARGINAL COST (the price) MUST MEET THE AVERAGE VARIABLE COST AT ITS MINIMUM POINT ON A GRAPH THUS THE PRICE WILL ALWAYS MATCH THE IMPLICIT/EXPLICIT COSTS.

What all that junk up there basically means is that the individual not only pays the full market value of an item but the market value is also compounded by the bulk or total unit cost. Thus for your little graphics card you are both paying for the unit value and the unit price as a whole.

Another short listen. Alienware is considered a reseller and thus their products cost doubly then they otherwise would. Dell on the other hand holds exclusive contracts(why do you think AMD is underrepresented or not represented at all) rights with certain manufacturers like Intel thus they can and often do provide their costumer with liquidated deals(since they received the products at next to nothing).

OK enough schools over.

err whateever... i didnt read that post above me, anyway, if you are new to overclocking, read this: http://forums.anandtech.com/messagev...&enterthread=y

OMG, after reading that I got dizzy. That did NOT help..lol, but thnx for the effort astu. That stuff is VERY confusing to me. I'll I want to do is OC my FX-55 to 2.7-2.8 on stock cooling. I know....

DARTH B.!!!!!!!!!!!!! When you get your ALX, look in your bios and tell me what values AW put in there to OC your chip to 2.8...that would be AWESOME!

overclocking is like this, you raise the FSB on your ram, say 200MHZ stock to 230MHZ, then you set a multiplier for your main CPU clock speed, like say 10. 230x11 = 2.3ghz

now if your processor was originally 200mhz FSB with a multiplier of 10, it would be 2 ghz, or 2000mhz. but you raised the FSB on your ram to 230mhz, and with a multiplier of 10, you get 2.3ghz. follow me?

so...didn't you just contradict yourself Mr Buffet?

So with the FX-55, I can just raise the multiplier until I get to 2.8 and not have to worry about any of the FSB or Voltages?

EDIT: HA, I read this at Xbitlabs.com on their review of the FX-55...

"I chose that overclocking method, too, and increased the multiplier to 14x, keeping the system stable. Trying to get some more megahertz by increasing the frequency of the clock generator, I found the system losing its stability, so the highest clock rate of the Athlon 64 FX-55 without any special cooling methods was 2.8GHz in my tests."

So all he did was raise the multiplier to 14x and he had a stable 2.8?

dont worry about voltages, you should be able to hit 2.8 without having to touch the voltages. if you want to overclock, get the corsair XMS ram that AW offers, otherwise you wont be OCing anytime soon.

oh man...well, I never OC'd this machine and I've thought it ran great for 3 years, but I thought this time around It might be fun to try it. Did i get ripped off buying AW's "Low latency" RAM? Looking at all its features, I figured that would work good for OCing. If I keep my system stock, will the corsair give better performance than AW's RAM?
if you REALLY wanna get into overclocking, sell that ram and get this: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...146-890&depa=0

that is the best ram ever made and overclocks like a dream. you might be able to get an extra 200 MHZ out of that cpu with that memory, but thats it.

Neosis, close the business book and speak Engrish. Yuo must be either:
1. In school
2. Just barely out of school

because no one talks like that outside of an academic environment. I can use my quantitative business methods to validate my theory if need be
post #77 of 142
Hi Craig. No contradiction at all because there are some businesses who are considered manufacturers of computers(IBM and Dell for instance) who purchase components like perhaps chips and LCD panels on a contractual basis and are not considered business resellers; in other words they are able to receive perks(like mass capital) and fall under the noncontractual basis of contracts.

Lets give an example. Dell holds exclusive bargaining and distribution rights to lg Phillips where dell buys i million units of LCD panels for $100 bucks a pop and turn around and sells them for $400(a normal markup is between 200% and 300% but often and depending on the market can far exceeds these figures). While company B purchases 300 units for $500 and turns around and resells them for $800 to $1200. What is important in these two companies is not the volume but the standing. Company A is able to sell things for cheaper not because they purchase large volumes but because through their contracts, they are considered a partner while company B merely resells the LCD by interpolating their own company's name.

Get ur nose out of that book, Neosis. Be the man ho that you know you are and get some tail. No book ever got no one some trim.

Yes Mr Beavis. As he scampers away in shame with his tail between his legs.

This is what multiple graduate degrees and involvement with the material studied does to a person. Darn my bad.
