Will Sony cable fit any HDD?

Thread Starter
I know someone whose HDD on their Sony GRV550 died. Sony's website says that it is not replaceable by the owner, which seems bogus. He wants to get a 60 Gig Seagate. Will Sonys cable fit any drive or is it propriatary?

If the drive died, have him remove it and take a look at the cable for yourself. Almost all notebooks use a standard interface for HDDs. However, best to look before you leap.

I'd be shocked if he can't install a different drive himself. As long as the physical dimensions are the same it should use the same, standardized cable.

Are you sure the message on the site wasn't just giving a standard "contains no user-serviceable" parts disclaimer? That kind of language is usually there to dissuade you from doing work that voids the warranty. (or more likely, dissuade you from breaking something where they can't tell if you voided the warranty...)
